After taking the much controversial acne drug "accutane" I saw stunning results in the clearness of my skin, but a noticeable problem with the way I was swllowing food. It gradually became more hard to keep food down and I was becoming very concerned. After getting an endoscopy done the doctor told me that my esophogus did not need stretching and nothing was wrong from what he saw. He prescribed me a drug called "protonix" which I take once every morning. He told me he thinks im not creating enough acid. Well I have been taking it for about two weeks and I have not seen any improvement at all. Its been months since I remember eating a meal or let alone any type of food or liquid (even water seems to get stuck) without having to gag myself so I dont choke. Im a 16 year old male and I weigh about 125 pounds. I know this isnt healthy for me and I am becoming very concerned.
I think my mom is going to try to get me in with a gastronomist. Im open to anything at this point. Please help!

It seems you have trouble swallowing both solids and liquids. You had endoscopy, hence we know it is not major league esophagiitis and stricture. You are young and hence unlikely to have an esophageal dysmotility.

All of these factors increase the pretest probability that what you have is a benign condition known as "eosinophilic esophagitis" plus/minus a component of heartburn. Unless you get biopsies, this diagnosis can be missed with a routine endoscopy.

When you get to see your gastroenterologist, be sure to also discuss the possibility of eosinophilic esophagitis as the cause of your symptoms.

Something you wrote did not make sense to me. Protonix (pantoprazole) is a drug that blocks stomach acid secretion. Therefore, it makes no sense if it would be prescribed because your stomach does not secrete enough acid.

Good luck and get well soon!

I have problems swallowing food and drinks sometimes, and for me it's caused by high blood pressure. I take Hawthorn Berry capsules 3 a day at different times, and Fish oil with Omega 3 capsules, 2 a day at different times, and after a while my blood pressure goes back to normal and I lose the inable to swallow feeling.
My dad was haveing trouble swallowing as well, and his was a heart condition, he had arteries clogged and had to have heart surgery, he's fine now. You need to go for an all around doctor physical check up and get EVERYTHING checked out, just to be safe, and mention these things to your doctor as we.. Take care and I hope this helped.

Difficulty swallowing and painful swallowing are listed as less serious side effects of this medication, accutane should be stopped immediately.

Protonix treats esophageal dysphagia from excessive acid reflux and can be required long term.

If things aren't improving, you need to go back and see your Dr again.
