Petroleum jelly is made from petroleum products, and petroleum products have been linked to cancer in the lab. The jelly though is relatively safe. I wouldn't worry about accidentally ingesting some that was on your lips though. Heck, think of the millions of moms that use it on their babies everyday. Now if you sat down and starting eating jars of it like it was ice cream, then you might have a problem. But then, if you are doing that, then you have other things to worry about than cancer.
If it really freaks you out, then you could use other petroleum free products. Many people do due to allergies, and you should be able to find them alongside everything else in the store.
Hope this helps! :-)

As generally known, Petroleum jelly will not cause cancer. It is perfectly safe and is an excellent ingredient for skin and hair care products. Any normal person need not have a fear of getting Cancer by using Petroleum Jelly. For lip cracks and minor rashes you can always use it.
But patients using anti-cancer drugs or chemotherapy drugs should avoid using Petroleum jelly.
Anti-cancer drugs can damage the ovaries and reduce the amount of hormones they produce. As a result, some women find that their menstrual periods become irregular or stop completely while they are having chemotherapy.
The hormonal effects of chemotherapy also may cause menopause-like symptoms such as hot flushes and itching, burning, or dryness of vaginal tissues.
These tissue changes can make intercourse uncomfortable, but the symptoms often can be relieved by using a water-based vaginal lubricant. The tissue changes also can make a woman more likely to get vaginal infections. To help prevent infection, avoid oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly, wear cotton underwear and pantyhose with a ventilated cotton lining, and don't wear tight slacks or shorts. Your doctor also may prescribe a vaginal cream or suppository to reduce the chances of infection. If infection does occur, it should be treated right away.-

I hope not. Instead of using petroleum jelly, why not use a regular lip balm. It's jsut easier on the tummy when you do swallow some.

Petroleum jelly pretty much just goes right through the digestive tract. Your body doesn't absorb it at all; you just excrete it with other waste.

You need to get your information from more reputable websites like the American Cancer Society or NCI. Blogs are riddled with misinformation and plain falsehoods.
