I've never been a waitress but I have 2 friends that have experienced waitressing. It takes time to get used to. One of my friends quit because she said that it was too much for her and the hourly pay is little but basically make what you would earn in tips.. This is how you know your cut out for that type of job..(what I have observed)
Are you a very social person?
If you are then you will win your customers and gain good tips
Do you have a good memory?
Customers like when you pass them their order instead of someone elses. You will get more in tips
Do you have good balance?
You may have to balance 3 plates at a time this will make service faster.. Customers like to have their food at the same time or in a short time...
If your good on these 3 things then this is a good job for you and don't worry about it.. but being social is the main thing, have a sense of humor, observe your customers, and be friendly. Follow this and you'll have it in the bag!

It's hard work, busy, a lot of time on your feet, and hopefully only occasional snotty customers. However, it can also be rewarding, and not only in the monetary sense. If you're nice and courteous, and even get to know customers, they become your regulars and tip even better. Managers may crab at you in the back, but don't take that out on the customers. Always paste a smile on your face for them. Watch and pay attention to the other servers. If they've been there a while it must be working for them.
I've made some great money in the past, sometimes over $40 an hour with tips. You gotta treat the customers right and they'll do right by you. A bonus is it can be so busy, you're running around so much you could shed a couple extra pounds! I know I did.

hard work, on your feet for long periods of time, days with little money but a lot of work, but then days when you do make very good money... good to have spending money from...
check with your state though, in many places, they will not hire servers under 19 because they can't serve liquor, so most likely you would be a busser or host

It's a very social job. You need to train your mind to stay cool and happy, and a bit "serious with a smile" so you don't attract silly comments from customers.
Have also some good answers in mind "polite and firm" to face weird comments.
Good luck

Never been one, but it seems really busy and you're constantly on your feet. That's why you can't be cheap and gotta tip them for their effort.
