I am about to embark upon a supervised 40-day water fast. I will drink only water for 40 days (no other food will be consumed). How much weight can I expect to lose?

I am a 20-year old female, 166cm tall (5'5"), and weigh 83 kilos. I have recently been unwell, and over the past 3 months, have gained almost 30 kilos. Please advise me.

Please note that I am aware of dangers etc. I am however, being supervised medically, and it is on the advice of my medical practitioner.

Thank you

About half a kilo per day at first, tapering to around 250 grams per day after a week or so. You could lose as much as 20 kilos in 40 days if you are also able to be normally active during your fast and if you don't cheat. Be sure that you are medically supervised. Forty days is a long fast. You will not just lose fat and water with this kind of fast but muscle and connective tissue as well. Forty days is extreme, even with medical supervision unless getting some weight off quickly is necessary for your wellness. The biggest problem is that weight lost so quickly by this method also tends to return quickly because your body, after 40 days of fasting, will undergo some metabolic adjustments to both conserve energy (that slows weight loss) and replace lost body reserves very quickly when nourishment becomes available (that speeds up regaining the weight.)

Losing more slowly and relearning how to eat for life is really much better. It's also much harder. Good luck with getting your weight back to where you would like for it to be.

There are three main ways to lose weight quickly.

1) Use only water as liquid and eliminate all other liquid drinks from your diet. You must drink as much water as possible every day. You must drink about half of your weight. If you have weight of 200 pounds then you must drink about 100 oz of water.

2) The interval between the eating is very important. If you eat once, then you must eat next after 4 hours. You must take breakfast regularly. In the night eat your food three hours before going to bed.

3) Walking is very good. You must walk as much as you can. Walk everywhere you can. Use of elevators and escalators must be reduced and instead of these you must climb stairs more often.

These are some of the fastest ways to lose weight. By just following the simple steps, you can lose your weight very quickly. You must consult your doctor if want to change your diet or exercise routine.

A vegan diet I believe would get better results. Go spend a month at the optimum health institute in California or Texas. Did you know that you can change your pulse just by drink water? It's true and when this happens your thought pattern is shifted and illness becomes health. If you do go ahead and do this fast I would suggest that you have your own personal reality checks.... The funny thing is your body will tell you when it's time to stop and if you love your body....stop.

You're being supervised "medically" doesn't mean you are being supervised by a qualified doctor (i doubt you are).

Is your "medical practitioner" an MD, a nutritionist? More likely a new ager/alternative medicine believer\pusher.

Not that I'm against fasting.

I've done a few 1 week fasts. One was "supervised" at a health spa in Thailand.

If you choose to fast you should consume 3 or 4 Fibre (Metamucil) type of drinks along with herbal supplements to provide needed nutrients. The fibre will help eliminate a lot of nasty "stuff" that is impacted in your colon.

Drink lots of water during the day.

How in the heck did you gain 30 kilos in 3 months??? Either you have a medical reason that made you gain the weight or an under laying emotional problem. If that's the case, you may lose weight initially only to gain it all back plus many more kilos.

Eat healthy and EXERCISE, that is the ONLY answer for you.

I'm surprised that a doctor would allow you to go into such a drastic approach. It is dangerous to say the least. You will definitely loose a lot of healthy tissue because the body will start to eat itself in order to meet its basic nutritional needs. You may even loose heart and muscle mass, and actually retain fat as a result. The body has a self defense mechanism that when it senses that you are starving will preserve fat and slow down its metabolism in order to preserve life over a longer period of time. I would get a second opinion if I were you and remember extreme diet and exercise plans are unhealthy and do not provide long term results for a healthy life.

DO NOT DO A WATER ONLY FAST FOR MORE THAN 15 days, and THEN only if you TAKE NO MEDICINE, you don't smoke, and you can 'meditate' ... it would be 'much better' for you to do a 30 day 'clear juice and water fast' ... but you should NEVER do a 'fast' right after you've been 'ill.' If your medical practitioner is 'advising you' to go on a 40 day water only fast to 'lose weight' you should tell him that you will probably lose less than 15 kilos, and you will 'gain them right back' when you start eating again ...
I've 'fasted' for thirty days several times in my life ... but ONLY the 'clear juice and water' fast, and ONLY for 'religious purposes.' I lost about 15.5 kilos in that thirty days ... you'll actually lose LESS if you drink JUST WATER because your body will go into 'acute starvation mode' ... if you want to 'really lose weight' I suggest that you go on a good 'diet and exercise program' and lose the weight more slowly so you can 'keep it off' when you are down to your 'ultimate goal weight.'
