For all you show dog people out there I got a Q for ya :) I watch Westminister each year, and remember a particular GSD being shown who was said to have been found tied up to a tree by the highway. If that is so, obviously it would have been impossible to find the papers. So I'm guessing there was a way to get the dog papered? I am asking as I have a GSD & have toyed with the idea of entering him as a novice in shows but I didn't know if it could be done, how to go about getting papers on him. Also he is 4 yrs old, is that too old to start out a dog? He has excellent conformation (tho he is on the larger size & not sure he will qualify weight wise, need to have him weighed to make sure). I'm just curious about any options, if any....I might have as I thought it might be fun to enter him in a show. Thanks :)

I hadn't thought about the dog being chipped...that would make sense. I thought he had simply found it along the road & was always blown away by that wondering how on earth he was able to show the dog lol. Thanks for the info guys.

There is no way to get a dog registered if it is of unknown origin. If the litter is not registered by the breeder, there is no way of getting a dog registered.
I believe in the case you are talking about, the dog wasn't abandoned, but discovered with the owners by the handler.

Are you talking about Chimo, the bicolor GSD? If so he had papers, I know his breeder thru a friend who unfortunately bought 2 sick defective dogs from her. If your dog has no papers he can not be shown in the breed ring, but can be shown in every other type of show with AKC. AKC has an ILP, Indefinite Listing Privilege, registration which neutered purebreds are eligible for. GSD do not have a weight disqualification. They do have height restrictions tho males are 24-26" at the withers. I have shown my GSDs in AKC breed rings and obed and titled them in obed. I've show one in WWKC too. The conformation ring is very competitive and only the top dogs shown by top handlers do any winning. I have pointed my black GSD in the breed ring but knew him being a Champion was unlikely unless I hired an handler.

Maybe what they meant was that the dog was living with someone by the highway who kept him tied up. Then person showing him bought him from them along with the papers.

Without papers on your dog the most you can hope for is limited registration (can't remember the actual name at the moment) which would allow you to show in sporting events, but not conformation. You also need to prove your dog has been neutered before they will issue this type of registration, which automatically disqualifies him for conformation.

Here's a link to the limited registration called Indefinate Listing Privilege I mentioned above. http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm

No, that story was true but, they knew who the dog was and the owners. If I'm not mistaken he was stolen and left there. He wasn't just any GSD left there. The Microchip proved who he was. In that case yes you can then show the dog. This is another reason why micro chipping is so important. That was a very good question. All the best;~)

if you're talking about dallas i believe i heard they knew who ownened him and were able to get the papers that way. you cannot show any dog in AKC without documentation of the linage. personally i say enjoy your pet and have him neutered, it will increase his life expectancy. you won't have to worry as much about prostate cancers, testicular tumors and anal tumors and all the other lovely medical and behavioral issues associated with intact male dogs. if you want to do something fun with him. start him off in obedience, then you can do agilty and schutzlund with him if you like. you can get an ILP listing from akc for him as long as he's neutered and appears to be full blooded, the linage doesn't matter since he will have to be neutered before they give you an ILP listing number. but you will be able to work him in many other akc sponsered events, just not the show ring. if you are interested in showing many kennel clubs offer mixed breed or unregistered show events for people who want to show their dogs but do not have or know the linage of them. it's fun and way more relaxed if you're wanting to show just for fun.

"Found" is a relative term. The dog was seen.. spotted.. noticed.. and was AKC registered.

He can't go into confirmation shows but you would have a blast with agility.
