Clearly, their fingerprints are still on the gun! I mean, it looks really cool when they do it, but isn't it just plain dumb? Wouldn't they want to get rid of the evidence instead of advertise it?

They should be wearing gloves. The easiest way to link someone with a crime is to find them with the tool. Dropping the tool at the scene eliminates that link. The more links that are eliminated the less chance of being associated with the incident.

Now cannoli is a different subject, always leave the gun and take the cannoli.

so the gun cannot be used to commit a crime again and so the killer will not be found in possesion of it. Basically if they drop for the police to find it wont be used again in a crime creating a trail back to the person that used, and like stated earlier it is no longer in possesion by the person who commited the crime. That why Mike Corleaone dropped the pistol after shooting the Turk and the crooked cop in "The Godfather".
