I am looking for an operating system that allows me to do very basic computer functions without all the bells and whistles. I hate being suggested crap all the time, so I want a lean OS, one that uses very little of my processor. I want one that is good for the internet, and doesn't gum up the works.

I used to have Windows Me and I was annoyed to no end. Then I got XP, and I was happy with that for a while. I still have it and everything is all gummed up.

Whatever the problem is, I don't care because I am in the market to rebuild a new computer from scratch and I really don't like the Vista system because I understand that it uses up all your processor and memory power. Is MS coming out with a better one? Should I stick with XP?

Until they (Microsoft Co.) will be able to make us a complete OS (and i think that would be NEVER), you should stick on XP. It has it`s gaps, but with a very carefull eye on him, the registry and stuff, you should be making XP go clockwork. Contact me on alexys_QQ@yahoo.com for some more advices. Cheers!

take if from a software engineering friend of mine, i quote "i wouldn't use that piece of crap on anything that i or the company that i work for" . he was talking about the vista os.
it seems this os is a little like me, put together in a hurry without getting all the bugs worked out. it may be stable in a machine that is built by compac/hp or dell or the like, but for builders, it tastes a little salty. drivers are not there for most equipment such as audio, vids, even motherboards.
lets let Bill figure out for a year or two to get his stuff straight. then we'll talk.

You could stick with XP - but this might be the time to dual boot your machine with Linux (Ubuntu) - totally free - and another good part - spyware and virus free.

Linux.

It's free, it runs circles around any Microsoft OS, it's more stable, and most of the Internet servers are running it.

Microsoft has even switched its own servers to Linux. Why?

Xubuntu uses the XFCE desktop enviroment which is alot smaller than GNOME(Ubuntu) or KDE(Kubuntu). It is very lightweight and works well with older, and slower machines

Ubuntu looks like what you want, as long as you don't expect to play games.
