Ashteroth and Baal both predate the Hebrew and Christian religions. They were not the Gods of people of the woods and fields.

A hint: BAAL was a fertility God and the principal deity of the canaanite pantheon. The name has a generic meaning of "Lord Master Owner and Protector." Many States and free cities of the period before the Hebrew invasion, called their specific Gods, Baal.
Statues of Ashteroth are found by archaeologists even in Isrealite sites.

Wow great question!
Baal was the "supreme" god and Ashtoreth was the female counterpart to Baal, and one of his wives.
Baal was god of nature and had a horrible practice of burning people alive as a sacrifice to him. Ashtoreth was a goddess. of love and fertility.
The closest comparisons I can make would be Baal worship is any worship that exists to a false god.
The elevation of sexuality could be similar to worship of Ashtoreth.
