It's the weirdest thing, whenever I plug something in, or pick up a video game controller and he sees the cord move, my dog runs away in fear. He won't even step over them if one is lying on the ground. He's not a rescue dog, I've had him since he was six weeks old, so I know nothing happened to him in another household. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help him overcome this fear?

I would never force a dog to deal with something that it had problems with, nor would I coddle him ("It's ooookkkkaaaaayyyyy.....") whenever a cord showed up. It's best to be aware of your dog's problems, but to keep your behavior the same. Don't behave as though those cords are any big deal and your dog will desensitize to them. If you happen to set down your dog's dinner bowl near a cord, that would be good. Your dog will get rewarded for being near cords and it won't be a big deal.
Good luck!

It is good you do want him messing around with cords. My dog is the same way just with well everything. It usually happens if they are babied a lot or never see a cord until there almost fully grown and then something traumatic happened. Most dogs don't get over there fears. My dog is incredibly afraid of paper towels and if you ever try to get her close to one she runs and hides under her table.

So you should just let her be a cry baby about it. Sometimes when you try and force her to not be afraid she doesn't trust you anymore then it takes months even years to get her to trust you again.

Maybe he thinks the cords are snakes...even though he may not have ever seen a snake, many animals have an inborn fear of snakes.

Put the dog in your lap (I recommend onleash) and give him lots of cookies/cuddles and then pull the controller out of your back pocket. Keep giving him the cookies/cuddles and petting him, but don't let him get freaked out. I would keep working up until I got to a big orange electrical cord. I would also put a coiled cord down somewhere he HAS to walk by everyday, so that he gets used to seeing it. My girl hated the site of the vacuum and would hide in my room, I started leaving it by the door we go out for fun walks and potty breaks and pretty soon she started ignoring it and not even paying attention to it. Now I can vacuum all around my girl and she doesn't even move until I get within about a foot of her.

well don't you think it's actually well... good that he's afraid of cords? because that way he won't chew on them and he won't electrify or even kill himself. so right now, it's best not to worry about it. but if you want him to over come his fear, then think about how ppl would do it. maybe you could put some perfume on the cord so the dog will be curious and come close. idk.. i hope this helped.

I don't know. One of my dogs is afraid of plastic milk jugs! I've had her since she was abandoned at three weeks of age,and I have no idea why she is afraid of them.I wouldn't fret too much about it,though,as he's safer not wanting to go near them.

discuise the cords or cover them in a place he visits often then each day uncover them bit by bit not to much at a time tough because you don't want him to get to scared
