He was a bible student in the middle ages who realised that what the Catholicl church was teaching then...and now...was not supported by the scriptures..the Bible itself.
Because of this, the Catholic church had him put to death.
He could have qualified as a Jehovah's Witness.

Martin Luther (November 10, 1483 – February 18, 1546) was a German monk,[1] theologian, and church reformer. He is also considered to be the founder of Protestantism.[2]
Luther's theology challenged the authority of the papacy by emphasizing the Bible as the sole source of religious authority and the church as a priesthood of all believers. According to Luther, salvation was attainable only by faith in Jesus as the messiah, a faith unmediated by the church.[3] These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization.[3]
Luther's translation of the Bible into the vernacular, making it more accessible to ordinary people, had a tremendous political impact on the church and on German culture. The translation also furthered the development of a standard version of the German language, added several principles to the art of translation,[4] and influenced the translation of the English King James Bible.[5] His hymns inspired the development of congregational singing within Christianity.[6] His marriage to Katharina von Bora set a model for the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.[7]
Luther is also known for his writings about the Jews,[8] the nature and consequences of which are the subject of scholarly debate. His statements that Jews' homes should be destroyed, their synagogues burned, money confiscated, and liberty curtailed [citation needed] were revived and given widespread publicity by the Nazis in Germany in 1933–45.[9] As a result of this and his revolutionary theological views, his legacy remains controversial.[10][11]

Martin Luther was a German Catholic monk who believed that the Catholic church was 1. wrong about handing out indulgences and 2. believed that the common people should be able to know what the bible said and be able to read it for themselves. He stood up against the Catholic Church and was excommunicated and declared a heritic. The German Luthern Church and many of our own Protestant churches find their roots in what he believed. It was his influence that was responsible for the Gutenburg Bible, one of the first bibles written in a language other than latin.

He was a little bit of a hypocrite. He left the church because they weren't following the bible and were handing out indulgences but then took a few books out I think.
He had guts, I'll give him that!
