If a person can sin, and then ask Jesus for forgiveness, what's the point of trying not to sin?

I am new to Christianity, I do read the Bible, and I am a good person. But sometimes, for example, I might want to have unmarried sex or get drunk or whatever.

...because the whole goal of life is to be happier. Sin does not bring lasting joy. As we repent, we change. Our Father is trying to make us more happy and perfect. He said:

"For behold, this is my work and my glory, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man."

True repentance involves, for one thing, turning your back on the sin. Christ through His Atonement and The Holy Ghost will change your heart and desires as time draws on. You will eventually become born again (a long process) and be a new person. Only because of what Christ did can this occur.

God has limits on forgiveness. The prime reason we try not to sin is because we love God. The second reason is that we don't want to become deliberate sinners.(2 Peter 2:20-22;Hebrews 10:26-31) To make a practice of sinning after we have come to know God's way would be committing the unforgivable sin.

Now, don't misunderstand me. A practice of sin is not the same thing as a habit you have that you are trying to break. Practicing sin is like a revolving door of committing sin(s), asking forgiveness, wishing you could do the sin, sinning and it starts all over again. Trying to break a habit is sinning, asking forgiveness, some relapses, but with each time you don't sin you grow stronger and don't relapse as often. You are very sorry you've failed each time and sincerely want and try to stop.

CONSCIENCE.

If you are entering into something you know is wrong then you should not enter into that thing.
If you know stealing that thing is wrong you should stop yourself from doing it.

What you have to understand is that right and wrong are for the good of humanity, not to put on a good show for god. If you do something wrong- it is WRONG and if you understand WHY it is wrong you will not do it. If it was only about God watching you then it would not make sense.

If you know something is wrong to do then you do not do it because it is wrong- not because God is watching you!

The forgiveness comes into play when we make mistakes. When we sin out of weakness or out of ignorance. We know we did something wrong and because we have a CONSCIENCE we feel guilty and hopefully repent. We go to God to ask forgiveness because we know we should not have committed the sin in the first place.
If we could not learn from our past sinning mistakes and went on sinning the same sins we would be no more than toddlers.

All my best-

True repentance, is in the not repeating the sin for which one is seeking forgiveness.

Examples:
To the adulterer:
Jesus said (Matthew 5:27-28)“YOU heard that it was said, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say to YOU that everyone that keeps on looking at a woman so as to have a passion for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

To the theif:
Paul wrote:
Ephesians 4:. 28 Let the stealer steal no more, but rather let him do hard work, doing with his hands what is good work, that he may have something to distribute to someone in need.

These two examples show that through the training of the conscience, Bible principles can, and will empower the beleiver to overcome sins that are temptations to us all.

A sin isn't just a sin because it is offensive to God. One reason a sin is a sin in the first place is because it is harmful to us. Sin is like poison to our spirits and souls, which is why Jesus died to offer us relief from it's effects. To recieve forgiveness, a person must be truly sorry by realizing the harm the sin causes and by turning away from it. The payment for this harm both earthly and eternal, has been paid for you by Jesus. Also, when you love God you'll begin to realize what sin is, what sin does and begin to hate sin.

Romans 6:1 What should we say then? Should we keep on sinning so that God’s grace can increase? 2 Not at all! As far as sin is concerned, we are dead. So how can we keep on sinning? 3 All of us were baptized into Christ Jesus. Don’t you know that we were baptized into his death? 4 By being baptized, we were buried with Christ into his death. Christ has been raised from the dead by the Father’s glory. And like Christ we also can live a new life.

I'm not a christian, I just asked about confession and got some wonderful answers. I think coming from my jewish upbringing the point of not sinning is to not waste time. I think that doing wrong to another at least deserves a conversation to iron things out and apologies. Sinning on purpose is not quite right.

Romans 6:1-2 " 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?"

You're missing the point. In order to truly repent, you have to turn from your sin and to God (Acts 3:19). If you're not doing that, you're not truly repenting, and therefore don't have true forgiveness.

Sin brings destruction to your life. It's not about rules, it's about the better way. God made you. We all want to be so self sufficiant and have control but it just isn't so. We are here b/c he made us and continues to love us and desires for us to grow to a place that will be forever in peace/love with Him. So when we sin, we are being an offense to Him. It's like spitting in His face after all He does for you. You could've not woken up this morning, but you did. Atheists want you to believe you have the control or that there is no control and no purpose. But it just isn't so. You have a purpose that will really fulfill you, but you can't do it bogged down with sin and selfishness. Repentence isn't just paying homage to the King. It also clarifies YOUR life and makes things better.

You guys don't understand. Sin is not merely a choice. It's a trap with consequences. Hell is a long-term illustration of this principle. God created Hell so people would be afraid of their sin, not wanting to go there.

Sin is not something to play with. It's designed to enslave you. Jesus offers forgiveness so you can free yourself from it.
