Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
In the Creation account, Adam, the newly created man, came alive when God Breathed into him "the breath of Life."
So what is a Soul?

A soul to me is that part of us that makes our bodies alive. It is where our consciousness lies and the thing that makes us self-aware. It is also the part of us that communes with God.

The soul is the spirit and the body together which forms a human life. The living soul which became Adam was the combination of his body which was prepared and Created by God and his spirit which God breathed into him. When a man dies, he is no longer a living soul. His body is dead, and his spirit which is his consciousness continues to live on and "returns to the God who gave it". Sometimes "soul" is used interchangeably with spirit. But technically a soul is a living person with his spirit and body combined. When a person is resurrected, his spirit and body is then reunited forever into a living and glorified soul.

"I know that my Redeemer liveth, and will stand at the latter-day upon the earth; and though skinworms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God." was the testimony of Job in the oldest book in the Bible.

The rational soul of man has supernatural, infinite aspirations. If the rational soul were dependent upon the body and died together with the body, it should necessarily submit to the body and follow it in all its appetites. Independence would have been contrary both to the laws of nature and to reason, because it disturbs the harmony between the body and the soul. As dependent upon the body it should submit to the body and follow in all its appetites and desires, whereas, on the contrary, the soul masters the body, imposes its will upon the body. The soul subjugates and curbs the appetites and passions of the body, and directs them as it (the soul) wills. This phenomenon comes to the attention of every rational man; and whoever is conscious of his own rational soul is conscious of the soul's mastery over the body.
The mastery of the soul over the body is proved by the obedience of the body when it is being led with self-denial to sacrifice for the sake of the abstract ideas of the soul. The domination by the soul for prevalence of its principles, ideas, and views would have been entirely incomprehensible if the soul died together with the body. But a mortal soul would never have risen to such a height, would never have condemned itself to death along with the body for the prevalence of abstract ideas that lacked meaning, since no noble idea, no noble and courageous thought has any meaning for a mortal soul.
A soul, therefore, which is capable of such things, must be immortal.

A soul is the combination of a spirit body and a physical body.

You probably want to know what a spirit is, though. You are your sprit and now you've ben given a body which you need to learn how to control.

The spirit is the part of you that lived with your Heavenly Father before this life. As a spirit in antemortal life you learned and grew, etc. You couldn't progress any further and so God made a plan so you could. That's what you're doing now. You accepted that plan and...well, the rest is history. :o)

A soul is the mythological substitute for a conscience. I find it inexcusable to have god that only caters to a single sect of mankind who subscibe to genesis. who said the awe of the universe that is the basis of all religious systems is dependant upon myth that coincides with the universe ... next I'll have to be wary of black cats crossing my soul.
Peace and happiness through the wonder of the universe and the understanding of mankind.

Your soul is the real you, not the you were trained to be or who you think you are. Sometimes people suppress their soul to fit into society. And your eyes are the window for your soul. Your soul is the spiritual you and the you that yearns for God. When God breathed in Adam, his breath became adam's soul...It's just my thoughts, and I think people should pay attention to their soul, they just focus on their flesh

A soul, according to my belief, is a place deep within each of us. It's where God places all his graces. This repository is what causes us to behave in a moral, ethical way. It's also a part of our conscience. It's God's graces that help direct us on the straight path to eternal life - despite what atheists say.,

The soul is your eternal spirit which is created when you are conceived, lives in you while you are alive and leaves your body when you die to live in eternity (either heaven or hell).

It is a scientific fact that when you die, at the moment of death, the human body loses 3 ounces.

The soul is the inner you, your spirit dwells in your soul. upon death, the spirit & soul departs from your physical body and goes to heaven, or hell. your soul is your spiritual body. The soul has a form, in the story of the begger, and the rich man, they both died, and the rich man opened his eyes, and seen the begger over in paridise. The begger could be reconized by his soul. The rich man's soul was in hell, he could see, and had feelings, also compassion for his brothers.

a soul is a vague term, and can apply any number of ways. but in that context, it's the spark of awareness. adam became aware of his surroundings, though in a somewhat naive manner as he had no knowledge of good or evil.

this is more or less what the human soul is.
