My left eye is 20/300 with -1.0 astigmatism. My right eye is 20/4.50 with -.50 astigmatism. At 44, I am getting presbyopic. I need +1.50 reading glasses over my contacts. Is this a good idea or would I be better off with bifocals? And what about mid distance? Where is the cutoff? I'm so confused!

I don't know if you are aware but they make bifocal contacts or you can use a contact in one eye for up close and one in the other for far away. I used to work for an eye doctor and seen it done that way a lot.

Yes, you can do that. I got some reading glasses to use when I wear my contact lenses. I have a hard time reading with the contacts on except in strong light. I can see just fine close up without glasses or contacts and can see pretty well with my single lens glasses. I should mention I am over the age of 40. You don't say how old you are but don't get laser surgery if you're over 40. You'll still need glasses no matter what.

Depends on what you prefer. Simple solution is what you are doing: reading glasses over the contacts. If you are using +1.50, mid distance should not be an issue

And another solution is to use "monovision", one eye for distance, the other for near. Bifocal and multifocal contacts are available, they cover near and mid: ask your contact lens fitter or eye doctor about a trial of monovision or multifocal contacts.

I have bifocal contacts which are for distance and mid range and I wear regular reading glasses over them for reading and computer work... have done for years, I hate bifocal glasses... makes me dizzy!!!
