Go to the below listed URL. Use the Navy Log search function. Every man who ever served in the Navy is in that data base. It may not give you dates of service, but it will tell you if he was in the Navy.

If they are dead, I think that you can request info from the National Archives. If not, I think you have to ask them; unless they are famous, then there might be a book or article about them.

i dont know if they used the social security # like they do now for their service #.
but you would need that, plus what branch and year.
get ahold of the veterans administration records dept.
