My little sister is going into the fifth grade and has to choose an instrument. She wants to go into band so she can play the drums next year, but has to pick a woodwind instrument this year to start off. Which one do you think is the easiest to learn, or what are your suggestions?

Okay, It really depends. At my school they did a mouthpiece testing.
If she has relativly(sp?) small lips flutes good. If she doesnt have braces clarinet would be okay. If she does it would seriously hurt the inside of her lip. Alto sax is okay if you can play the clarinet. Trumpet is good if you arent as good with your fingers, and it is pretty easy too. French Horn is another story; I've been playing for five years and it is still hard. But, if you keep at it it will be easy. Trombone will be easy, just keep those slides in the right place. Tuba and baritone are just like the trumpet: easy. Sorry Im no help with Oboe or Bassoon. I dont really know about them. Drums are also easy. If she has even one brain cell she can play percussion and pitched percussion (xylophone, marimba, vibes, ...)

I started flute in 5 grade i had awalys wanted to but if she doesn't want to play the flute don't make her if she doesn't like the instrment then she won't want to pratice it or even go to class you could take her to a concert with woodwinds or maybe talk to people you know who play them let her hold and maybe blow in to it watch them play it and she how she likes it. I hope this helps!

The only instrument that is easy is the triangle, most music is hard to play, so don't go for easy go for a sound that you love, if your sister likes flute why not talk her into that, drums for a little girl, I doubt it, she probably won't have the strength for it !!!!!

I would suggest starting out on alto saxaphone, then going on to drums later if she really wants, but if she learns alto now, she'll be able to use that skill later in life.
