I picked my dog up 2 days ago from a boarding/training facility where he had been for 2 weeks. His energy and appetite were good the day we brought him home and the day after. This morning, I fed him before leaving for work, as usual. I always leave him a biscuit in his Kong before leaving. He did not eat the biscuit (a first) and he has had diarrhea all day. He did not eat dinner (also a first). Then he threw up this evening (another first). Is he just suffering stress after coming home? The trainer said that he may suffer from loss of energy and appetite, and changing from their food back to his regular food will cause the diarrhea, but he seems sick. Should I be concerned?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough... I too would not feel comfortable leaving my dog just for boarding... He was being professionally trained at a reputable facility. He was in a 6'x3' run, not a cage or crate. I was able to observe and participate in training... at no time was a cattle prod part of the process (please). As it turns out, he had coccidia. He is on antibiotics and prescription food now and is back to his normal self after a day of cleansing his system.

Get a sample of the dogs stool and take it to the vet. It could be some type of parasite from boarding the dog. Make sure you wash your hands well. Diarrhea all day is not normal and is not caused by merely changing the dogs food.

Any critter who has his food changed will or usually gets sick. Even our horses are on the same kinds of hay because of this...
Give him a little time. Hopefully you do not have to leave him at such a place much.
Watch out for dehydration. This is this biggest thing I see as a danger. Throwing up is very hard on anyones, or critters body. Plenty of fluids. If you can not get fluids to stay down then is when I would take him to the vet.
Hope everything turns out ok :0)

Yes, you should be concerned. Anytime a dog throws up and has diarhea, he could become dehydrated and is clearly sick. Does he have all his shots? If not, there are so many diseases he could get at the vets. I would take him to the vet. Next time, instead of boarding, consider a pet sitter.

I work at a dog daycare. We have plenty of our dogs who go for overnight boarding somewhere and come back a complete mess. They are so stressed that they get diarrhea and will vomit. They may not get fresh water, they are sore from being in a kennel all day. Some dogs come in with scrapes on their noses from sticking their nose out of the cage so much. I would suggest maybe finding a pet sitter in your area. Depending on your area, there are website where you can locate petsitters. This will be much easier on your pooch and keep you at ease also.

For now, just give your pup lots of hugs and kisses and assure him he is back at home and safe.

I don't leave my dog at the vet or boarding kennel as I end up with a sick dog. A dog getting sick at those places is a fairly common thing, You will end up with a vet bill as you will have to get him checked by your vet. Usually you end up paying twice for boarding. Get him to your vet as diarrhea is very bad for a dog as they get dehydrated very quickly. and you will not get anything paid by the kennel as you can't prove the dog got sick there.

I would say it has a lot to do with the difference in food. Unfortunately, no one informed you that you could send your dogs food (and the amount fed daily) with him.
So the combination of being home and getting his regular food could have much to do with this.
To be on the safe side, I'd make an appointment with the Vet to make sure all is okay with your dog.

It could be just stress and the food change. If it doesn't start getting better in a few days or if he develops other symptoms get him looked at, but it doesn't sound too bad right now.

It could be stress, or it could be illness, it could be a change in food, or it could be that he was mistreated during his boarding. Are you certain that no shock collars, or other harsh punishments were used on your dog during his time at the facility?

Yes I would be. If you don't see a great improvement by tomorrow I'd take him into the vet for a check up.

I bet it was the change of food. All animals have some upset to their stomaches when their food changes. I'd give it another day and then call the vet.
