How long have you had them? Are they both spayed or neutered?

It usually takes a week or two for cats to start to tolerate each other, sometimes a bit longer, sometimes a bit less.

It took 3 years before one of mine stopped hissing at the 'new guy'. Actual screaming wasn't done more than three times though - neither one wanted to get too close to the other and they kept it verbal, no physical contact.

If you can't separate them into different rooms so they both feel like they have a 'safe' space away from the other cat, then at least make sure you feed them in separate rooms so they don't feel they need to compete for food.

A product called Feliway is very helpful, it's a synthetic cat pheromone that calms anxious cats and can help smooth the transition. It's pricey, check around online for the cheapest, as it really varies in price even for the small bottle.

Or you can look for a natural flower essence called Rescue Remedy, which also helps calm cats. It's herbal, and can help get your two to take it easy.

I know two cats that that lived in the same home for 4 years and NEVER ended up getting along. We had to remove the one cat from the hallway so the other one could leave a particular room. They did stop *fighting* but were NEVER friendly with each other. I don't know if there is necessarily a rule! Kind of like how certain people never get along!

I had two female cats and when I brought the new one in, it took the new one to adjust to the older one. It took them about a week to finally be able to pass eachother but they were still really tense with eachother and would hiss at eachother. They finally calmed down after a month or two. Just be patient with them and let them work it out but keep them from hurting eachother.
