Such a Calvinist. Mankind really is basically evil, isn't he? Doesn't even recognize it sometimes. We have no hope without Christ.

Let me guess - either an Atheist or a very virulant non-Christian.

I am not a Christian, so you are not about to get the following lecture from one of those you so despise.

How many people have atheists killed in the past CENTURY? We aren't talking about hundreds of years here, but simple a few handefuls. Stalin was an atheist. So were many other communist leaders. They killed millions upon millions of people in this past century alone. They were atheists and out lawed religion in all their respective countries. They thought that it was the best thing to do - that religion was merely tying people down.

That alone should show how evil men can be when left to their own devices.

Pagans over their reigns have killed many, many people. The Romans invented all sorts of tortures - for murders they required the corpse to be tied to the murderer. That way, the killer started to decompose with his victim - until he died.

Other Pagan societies have violent histories all their own - available to you if you bothered to pick up a history book.

Look at India - where the caste system is in force. People are born, live and die on the streets. All because it is seen as the norm - that their karma did this to them and they deserve to die.

Islam was started by the sword and will end by the sword. Muslims have killed hundreds of thousands of people over the centuries they have been in action.

It is not religion that causes people to kill - although the reasons are often masked by religion. Instead it is the complete disregard for human life - something becoming more and more common in this present era - that causes all this violence.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

WOW..aren't generalities fun!!! The same could be said of Muslims, Jews, Atheists, Agnostics, or any other creed you wish to add.
Since we are being so general, lets ask this:
How is the human race not evil when all it has given humanity is violence and oppression for the last 1500 years?
And if that is a valid question;
Why don't we all- each and every person on this planet, kill ourselves and end the problem?
Generalities are fun.

Christianity isn't the only driving force of oppression and violence. Look at the middle east. There are two major religious groups in that region.

Not all Christian guidance is oppressive. It just depends on how you want to live your life. I know plenty of people that do not feel oppressed by their religion at all.

I'm not very comfortable with some of the constraints put on me by religious faith. It's a tough call, but too many good things come out of Christianity to completely doom the faith because of bad leaders.

Thank you for saying 1500 and not 2000. That shows that you know a bit of history.

Focus on the teachings of Jesus themself, focus on Jesus himself, focus on the people who were closest to him (the Apostles) and focus on what Christianity was before it became just another "in" religion that empires used to control and manipulate people.

People have always tried to use religion to their own ends instead of truly serving the God behind the religion...

- One last point - you are being very unfair when you say "all" it has given humanity is violence and oppression - do a websearch for "Christian Charities" if you want to see what I mean.

When a religion is supported by government it does evil things to people. When there is a separation between religion and government, religion does more good. You have to distinguish between the oppressive empires of the past and countries today like the US.

If people are free to practice religion as they choose, then religion can do more good.

Sticks the Crazy Medic said
wow, your mistaken, we got hospitals, from Christianity, its was the evil forces behind those in leadership of the church that oppress, Satan is the oppressor, he allows you to make errors that will cost you, My god set boundaries so I cant get hurt, Christianity has brought food to the poor, help people in witchcraft see the light, and helped shaped this nation, evil is in the devil who wants to hurt others, sin is what keeps men bound, and God gave the solution on the cross, sir please quit kidding your self, only your pride is asking this so you can live like God don't exist but he does.

Well Sticks,
You are right with some of what you had to say:
The Roman Military developed hospitals and with the onslaught of Christianity they were open for the general populace.
Satan is the oppressor? a person of authority who subjects others to undue pressures.
"he allows you to make errors that will cost you"
so Satan allows us the use our free will?
"My god set boundaries so I cant get hurt"?
sometimes Sticks even if you stay in those boundaries you will get hurt.

"Christianity has brought food to the poor, help people in witchcraft see the light, and helped shaped this nation"
Yes they brought food, slavery and disease that helped to decimate many cultures.
Yep and that light was usually from the fire they had lit underneath them.
Helped shape this nation...I'm not touching that one

"evil is in the devil who wants to hurt others, sin is what keeps men bound"
No evil is in all men/women and sin is what sets us free.

"and God gave the solution on the cross, sir please quit kidding your self, only your pride is asking this so you can live like God don't exist but he does".

What solution? that the death of one man will forever absolve all men/women of sin.
It is his freewill and right to believe or not believe in a God or Gods that is his choice.

Sisterzeal,
Actually I have kept very accurate records, the only problem seems to be you have missed the entire point of this particular thread. You talk of recent history and yourself, not the period of time laid out in the question.
Over the past 1500 years the Church and many of it's followers have perpetrated some of the most horrific acts in the annals of history. Some were on purpose and others through their own mis gotten beliefs, either way they caused pain and hardship to those who didn't deserve it.
So you can defend your beliefs all you like, but don't deny the truth.

Jesus said he did not come to make peace but to turn brother against brother, mother against daughter, son against father. He knew that the devil would try to mess up Christians by turning people against them. Some "Christians" give others a bad name.

Why explain it to you? You can't see it in front of your face.

It doesn't matter what bigotry we face here in Yahoo! Answers. The second they say, "100% one way," it's fairly clear that arguing with them is fairly foolish.

Pointing out the bigotry isn't.

Someone who can't think of one thing that Christianity has done that is good.

Says something about you.

Oh, I'm not religious.
