Last year I brought home alot more money to pay the bills than this year and I will be working more hours this year. How do I convince my job to switch me back to hourly (which I will get overtime) instead of salary? They said they have to do the same for all yet the boss has a brand new car and just bought 2 horses so I know they can afford it...My boyfriend says to give them an ultimatum and say either pay me more or I will have to find another job, yet I do not want to be biting my tounge because I really need this job...

Depending on what your job is, switching you to salary does NOT mean they don't still have to pay you overtime for hours worked over 40 peer week. If you are in management and making over around $24K per year, or in one of a specific list of professions, you might not be covered by overtime laws, but most jobs are still covered. Many employers misunderstand this. See http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/wages/overtimepay.htm and the links from that page, and http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/whd/fairpay/main.htm - if you have questions, call your local department of labor office and ask them.

You have every right as an employee to see proof that they HAVE to give you salary over hourly wages. Try not to compare yourself to your boss, because he probably makes more money than anyone thats under him business wise. I didnt understand really well on if your saying hes making hourly wages right? There has to be some policy in writing about who gets what. And maybe ask fellow co-workers if they are salary now. If you think something isnt right then go with your gut feeling. If hes a bad business man he will realize that his employees catch on sooner or later when it comes to who gets this or that and maybe other employees are wondering the same thing. He would be making an unfair move that will cost him many staff member losses at once.

Don't let your boyfriend talk you into quiting until you are sure this is in your best interest and you have a job lined up for you already with everything you need. The job market is a hard part of life with an unstable economy. Forget the fancy cars your boss has. You are making an honest living for yourself and a promised paycheck and health insurance is so vital...keep that in mind as you get discouraged and see his materialistic items.

If you're not in a management position there may be some laws being broken.
Check out the federal laws to see if you have to be paid overtime.
http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/whd/fairpay/fs17g_salary.htm
Also check with your state labor board for their rules on overtime pay for non exempt salaried employees.
