I agree and disagree.
Yes, more people have them than ever before, which makes them now almost a de facto job requirement. And there are some bachelor's degrees, such as most liberal arts ones, which were never really all that valuable. Today or 50 years ago, there's not much you can do with an English degree.
But I wouldn't go so far as to say a bachelor's degree is useless. In fact, in many careers - high paying ones, at that - a BA/BS is all you need. Nursing, architecture, computer science, to name a few.
As for whether a master's degree is more important now...yes and no. A debate rages on every job-advice site about the value of an MBA, and many master's degrees add little to your salary or even job prospects. Post-baccalaureate, it's really experience that matters. That's not true across the board, though. Let's take the above careers as examples, which serve as a no, yes and maybe:
1. Computer science - an advanced degree would probably be of little value, though courses would be. My brother only has a BS and makes six figures at Microsoft. A master's would add nothing.
2. Nursing. You can be an RN (and make almost $70K right out of the gate) with an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree, though the BS adds an extra $1000 or so to your salary. With a master's in nursing, however, many (high-paying) jobs are opened, such as nurse-midwife, nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist. Or you can take a pay cut and become a professor of nursing.
3. Architecture. Architecture is weird - some schools are bachelor's programs, some are master's. But if you went to "architecture school", you can be an architect, and in a few years, get your license. A Master's in Architecture is next to useless, unless you want to teach.
Which brings me to teaching. If you want to teach almost anything, you need a master's degree. At least.
Just my opinion...

It depends on the field you are trying to get into, but you're right, in many fields a master's degree is pretty needed.
