Originally, the rule was more along the lines of "Only wear white shoes between Memorial Day and Labor Day." Furthermore, it mainly applied to white pumps or dress shoes. White tennis shoes and off-white boots seem exempt, as are any shoes worn by a winter bride. "Winter white" clothing (e.g., cream-colored wool) is acceptable between Labor Day and Memorial Day too.

The rule is this: No white shoes or white pants/skirts in the daytime after Labor Day. (Dressy evening events are in their own special category, like weddings and punk rock.)

The real thing to avoid is the wearing of summer clothes in the fall or winter. But if you can find white pants in a properly warm fabric, then they are meant for after Labor Day.

Not wearing white after Labour Day - and not before June 1 - is a very old fashion rule not practised anymore.

It's just a tradition because white is considered a summer color... no white before Easter or after Labor Day. It's not followed as much now as it used to be.

Also you can wear winter white pants or something...winter white is usually not as bright (maybe off white) and it is in a heavier winter fabric....

You can wear white anytime of the year you'd like so long as the fabric is appropriate to the season.

That no longer applies. Silly rule anyway. Don't be telling me what to wear.
