Nobody in the Bible called themself a Christian, it was a term of derision cast at those who lived like "little Christs" (the literal meaning of the word).
Catholics are catholics, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who KNOWS Jesus calling them Christlike. =)

catholic means universal. as christians we try to become a universal group. Catholic, on the other hand, means the Catholic church, as you were thinking.
refer to the Nicene Creed
"we believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church"
but yes, i do agree it does get annoying because like you, i am not Catholic.

I dont refer to Christians as catholics... I kinda lump all of em like baptist, Lutheran, Methodist... etc... all under the umbrella term christian. Maybe I shouldn't.
