Only people from middle america with no culture think that malls are cool places to go and hang out. Affluence has a world all to its own. The Hamptons are were you will find them

Affluent people gather in the Hamptons/Sag Harbor because they think that's the proper thing to do...so they waste a lot of money to be around extremely rude, uptight snobs...
There are affluent people that do shop at Roosevelt Field and Walt Whitman mall, but for the most part, they're just people with a little bit of money and probably wouldn't be considered any great shakes...
Why are you asking this question, just out of curiosity?

I've been to the Hamptons plenty of times and there's no culture there either. ;)
Affluence, or wealth, is a highly subjective and relative term so I'm not sure why people are making such flat statements about affluent people ("they never go to malls"). If you go to a cookout in a nice area you will usually find a lot of affluent people. If you go to an expensive restaurant, odds are that the diners are affluent. Similarly, if you go to a mall with lots of expensive stores you will generally find affluent people there.
However, you generally will not find royalty in these places. Neither will you find polo players, landed gentry, Paris Hilton nor other socialites, etc., which seems to be how the other answerers define affluent people.

According to http://www.theskilledtraveler.com the hot spots are always the hamptons, along with Ocean Beach on Fire Island, Long Beach, The Nautical Mile in Freeport, and The Bridgeview Yacht Club in Island Park.

The rich and famous in Old Westbury I guess shop at Roosevelt Field. And I guess the rich and famous in Amagansett shop at the strip mall outside of the village of East Hampton. Those in Amagansett like Jerry Seinfeld, Paul McCarthy, Tom Hanks, Puffy Combs, Ben Affleck party at each other's house.

oh please.... it's summer..... the hamptons!!!
the truly affluent don't go to malls to get together. there are clubs in the hamptons and the surrounding areas which serve as a social hub. out east is where they play, at least on the weekends.
