Tattooing will always require cutting the skin in someway and adding ink/pigmentation. There is the traditional Japanese style of tattooing called Irezumi that uses similar implements to block printing (where it started). You could find one of those artist probably online or at a tattoo convention. Also if you travel to Thailand there is Thai monks who tattoo prayers of protection/strength on people bodies (I think this is once a year). Also finally there is the Polynesian Tatau. Multiple needles (spines?) arranged like a comb on a stick add ink voila. If you have cable watch national geographic or TLC they have great programs on the origins of tattooing.

There's scarification & branding, but those wouldn't be considered tattoos. One is done with a knife, the other, a hot piece of metal. Both look very beautiful when done correctly.

not sure if this helps, but... there's a guy near me (brighton, UK) that does it by hand, rather than with a tattoo gun - he uses needles, but apparently it hurts much less, and is generally more relaxed and easy - although obviously takes longer!

No, but they do have tattoos that only stay on for 10 days, but other than that, (you have to do it the typical way), my advice don't get a permenant tattoo cause when you are old it will make you look trashy, and they aren't very attractive, they are also very expensive to remove!
