Most of the time it is because they are jealous of your intelligence. Sometimes, smart people can also act cocky and 'too smart' without even knowing it. That makes the unsmart kids 'fire at will' to shrink them down to size. If you have been blessed with the wisdom and intelligence that makes it easy to learn and retain knowledge, be thankful, but push it off on your peers. In other words, don't be the first to answer a question or give an opinion. You know you already know the answer or may have the best idea for something. Leave it at that. Let someone else have a crack at it. Know it all's never sit well with kids that have to spend hours at the books. So if you do know it all, just act like you don't. Your friends will like you better for it.

Easy answer - ignorance and jealousy
Hard answer - bullying is one way that schools enforce norms, and smart is, oddly enough, not a norm among students in schools. Overlay that with the athletics culture that values the physical over the mental - with all of the school jackets and stuff for athletes. Overlay that with class issues (smart kids typically come from wealthier families). Overlay that with the realization that the other kids will be working for you, making less than you, have a poorer life than you . . . .Basically this is a sanctioning of social norms that you are violating.
I found it amusing when I got in trouble in school for 'smarting off'.
You can always re-set their locker combinations . . . or some other non-destructive passive aggressive thing.

When someone tries to pick on you in some way, especially when we all know he plays the inferior role. He do it outta jealousy, and he tries to bring you down in order to bring him up...
