the dentist I previously used did not use a liner when filling a few cavities. From what I understand this insulates your mouth from hot and cold changes. I had horrible sensitivity for a month and sometimes my mouth would throb so bad it would keep me up at night. I still am sensitive to the cold in these teeth. I learned that liners with certain properties can also help regenerate the tissues inside of your teeth. I was wondering if anyone knew if lack of a liner will cause any longterm damage to my teeth and if I might have to have work done later because of this?

additionally......the dentist that informed me of the lack of liner is the dentist I have always used. My husband is military and at my last visit I was geographically unable to use him. I find it odd that this is the only time I have had post filling pain and sensitivity is when there was no lining used.

FYI:
ANY TIME ANTIBODY'S TOOTH IS DRILLED THERE WILL BE THE FORMATION OF SECONDARY DENTIN.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
IT'S THE BODY'S NATURAL WAY OF FORMING MORE OF A PROTECTIVE LAYER NEAR THE NERVE.
THE PAIN/SENSITIVITY YOU FEEL WILL GRADUALLY DECREASE WITH TIME AS THIS LAYER OF SECONDARY DENTIN GROWS THICKER.
LINERS DO NOT CAUSE THIS SECONDARY DENTIN TO FORM. IT FORMS AS A RESULT OF THE TOOTH BEING DRILLED ON.
ps. the narure of "copal" is that this is a varnish, not a liner as many other agents and provides no thermal protection.

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and yes, I sometimes use copal to insulate the tooth if I feel it is very close to the nerve. However, I find this wears thin and stick to using a sedative filling liner that works better. Not all dentists try this. It is no fault of there own, just experience. Time does tell and I don't wait for that. Again, it is the dentist who has good training and those that do not. More importantly, if they have never had a root canal themselves, they do not get it.
NOTHING regenerates the loss of enamel or natural tooth structure. That is a myth. Once it is gone, all you have is what the dentist can do to protect the exposed dentin and keep what you have. That is very important. And this is typically a filling material that forms a bond to keep out bacteria and the tooth continuing to decay. There is really no other option. I wish there was. Teeth do NOT heal. The dentist can ony protect what you have. It is really that simple. I wish there was a magic bullet, but there is not. If you have any other questions, please ask. M

Well, they only started using liners about 10-20 years ago, prior to that people were always fine.

I got a root canal, and it took like two month's for the cold sensitivity in the area to completely go away.

Even now sometimes it feels...weird.
