I find it cute & inspiring. Good for you for showing some creativity. Good luck and have fun with your first year teaching second grade. It'll be both frustrating and rewarding every day.

I think it's perfectly fine and I'm pretty sensitive to that kind of thing although, I'm not a scientist!
You could talk to the kids about how a "Mad Scientist" has nothing to do with being angry and you could also talk to them about all the labels you're thinking of -- I mean most 2nd graders will have no idea what a history "buff" is, right? That should ease people's minds who may not like the term mad scientist. I don't see it as offensive in any way.

I work in a school and some parents would look for anything to be angry about. Some parents feel that they need to analyse everything that a teacher does and hold them under a microscope. And as you probably know, if one parent complains....well.....parents are never wrong! What if you were to put "Mad" scientists, then put a line through it and write something like "Happy" scientists. That should hopefully get your idea across and shouldn't give the opportunity for parents to be offended.

I'm not a parent b/c I turned 18 only 2 months ago and still in HS as a 12th grader, but I think it is great that you would put your students' work under those heading to honor their successes and that will make them continue to do great. It would be anything but offensive and it would be a completely positive action.

I am a parent of a son going into the first grade and I think that it is not only cute, but not offensive at all.
I think you are going to be a very good teacher

No-I think it would be cute, too. Isn't it terrible that you have to worry about being so politically correct that you thought you should ask? I commend you for becoming a teacher. With everything you will have to put up with (and I am not talking about your students) for so little pay, I thank you.

Only if they're genius scientists themselves. I don't think there's really a negative connotation to the phrase "mad scientist." You may, however, need to explain the use of the word "mad" in this sense to your 2nd graders. :)
PS to another poster- Science Wizards might offend Christians who think of wizards in a negative way. :P

I am a parent and think it is fine.
But if you are in doubt, change it
You never know about people now a days. Some are soo touchy and make a mountain out of every molehill they come across.

No, wouldn't offend me. Believe me when school comes, I'm more concerned with making sure my four have their homework done on time. I don't really care how the room's decorated. If you aren't using profane language, I don't really see why anyone would be offended.
