During an Ultrasound exam my vet found a mass, about 1/2 centimeter, on my minature Daschund's spleen. He tested him again 6 weeks later and the mass has remained the same size. My vet is suggesting removal of the spleen. Has anyone out there had their dog's spleen removed. How is the recovery. Does anyone out there have a dog with a growth in their spleen and opted not to have the surgery? I want to do what is best for my dog but I don't want to put him through such a surgery unless I am sure it is for the best.

P.S. The vet did not do a biopsy.

Please have a biopsy done first.

My bullmastiff went in for a splenectomy and we found out it was cancer.

he would've been so much better off if he didn't have surgery. I regret it.

good luck

That's quite a rough one, because we do not need a crystal ball and can't see for definite what the outcome of each and every alternative would be. When my Rainbow had a splenic hemangiosarcoma, the vet advised towards the surgical procedure announcing that it wouldn't prolong her lifestyles ample to be invaluable. But I transformed her to an anti-cancer weight loss plan, and he or she did so well that she lived gone what the vet predicted, and i stopped up wishing that I had performed the surgery in any case. However I made the first-class selection I would situated on what I knew at the time. And that's all you are able to do, quite. Simply weigh the options, opt for one, and hope for the first-rate. I'm sorry you might be on this obstacle.

There is a very common cancer in some breeds called Hemangiosarcoma. It is a blood cancer that usually starts in the spleen and is fatal. It is common in GSDs and my g/f's German Shepherd died from it. Her dog acted ill, and his abdomen was swollen, the vet operated, removed the spleen which had ruptured and he lived about 2 weeks. Just a month ago my other g/f and I took her 12 yr old Dutch Shepherd to the Emergency vet because she was having trouble walking. She was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma as well and euthanized.

Even if it grows, the vet still wouldn't be able to tell if it was harmful. The only way to tell if the tissue is cancerous or benign would be to perform a biopsy. Maybe you should seek a second opinion because if it was cancerous, it would be best to begin treatment immediately. This should be obvious. Good luck.

have a biopsy done first, I know of a bull terrier that had the surgery, sadly it was cancerous and she didn't live but a few months after the surgery. if it is cancer, maybe chemo is a better way to go. I am so sorry and good luck.

it somewhat is somewhat a troublesome one, through fact we don't have a crystal ball and could't see for specific what the effect of each decision could be. whilst my Rainbow had a splenic hemangiosarcoma, the vet recommended against the surgical treatment asserting that it does no longer extend her lifestyles adequate to be precious. yet I replaced her to an anti-maximum cancers weight loss software, and he or she did so nicely that she lived long previous what the vet predicted, and that i finished up wishing that I had carried out the surgical treatment inspite of each little thing. yet I made the applicable determination i could according to what I knew on the time. and that's all you're able to do, extremely. purely weigh the ideas, %. one, and need for the applicable. i'm sorry you're in this occasion.
