I can't make up my mind between these two cameras.

I'm leaning towards the Canon XTI just because of the self cleaning lens. Is this a real reason to lean towards the canon? Is that self cleaning lens really necesary?

Please let me know.

I want to take portrait pictures as well as outdoor landscape nature pictures.

Thanks,

Check the review of the Pentax K10D in the Aug. 2007 issue of Shutterbug magazine. Its available on-line at shutterbug.com. This Pentax has 10 megapixel, Image Stabilization in the body, and accepts all Pentax K-mount lenses - all the way back to the original line for the K1000 film camera.

Regardless of which camera you choose, its really the lenses that matter most. For portraits you'll want a lens with a focal length equivalent to 85mm to 105mm - a 50mm on a digital with a 1.6 factor = 80mm. A fixed focal length lens is faster and better suited for available light work. For landscapes you'll need a wide angle.

You'll also want to consider these filters: a HAZE/UV filter, a Skylight 1A (uncoated) or 1B (coated) filter, and a circular polarizer. The HAZE/UV filter greatly reduces the atmospheric haze you'll find in scenics; the Skylight eliminates the bluish tint seen in distant shaded mountains and in photos taken in open shade. More importantly, they protect the front element of your lens. One scratch or smudge and your expensive lens is an expensive paperweight. The polarizer allows you to darken blue skys so white puffy clouds really "pop" or just for the visual effect. It also removes glare/reflections from glass, water, sand, snow and painted metal - but not from polished metal.

Since you're investing in a new camera you may as well get some protection for it. Check cameraarmor.com and bonicadive.com and choose one of their protective covers.

A Sony person has 2 cents to characteristic. i've got considered the Sony A200 at wal-mart, ultimate purchase, c city for 499 with a lens. and in assessment to the Canon or Nikon, no choose for specific VR lenses, Sony has image stabilization geared up into the physique no longer the lenses so each and every lens is stable. Nikon and Canon, you will be able to desire to purchase those lenses, and that's in basic terms specific ones. All of my best lenses are stabilized, this is a few thing Nikon and Canon won't be able to do. Plus in case you do no longer see a Sony lens you like, hit up ebay, each and every of the vehicle concentration minolta lenses from approximately 1985 to latest will artwork on each and every of the Sony Alpha digital camera bodies. For D60 money you will be able to desire to step as much as the Sony Alpha A300 or perhaps the A350.

i am with ProDigiPhotog on this one. the d80 is leaps and bounds better.
the d40 is NOT compatible with most nikon lenses leaving you very very limited on expandability.
i would go d80, or with the xti and cut out the d40 UNLESS you are just shooting for fun, dont mind a limited range of lenses and dont want to expand
good luck!
