This was Jesus's first miracle....Jesus was invited to a wedding and at weddings food and wine were taking very seriously. and was considered an insult to the guests if the host ran out of food or wine. Wine was crucial, not for drunkenness, which was considered a disgrace, but for what it demonstrated. The presence of wine stated that this was a special day and that all the guests were special guests. Therefore the absence of wine was a social embarassment.

And when the host ran out of wine Mary came to Jesus to let him know and Jesus responded with, "Dear woman why come to me? my time has not yet come." By "My time" it means that Jesus has a plan for when everything must take place. A time for his first miracle..ecetera. But he saw how his friends were embarassed and what bothered them bothered him. So He told the servants to fill the wine jugs up with water and give it to the master of the feast. When the master tasted it the water had become wine.

Jesus saw the concern in the peoples faces and he made wine because it bothered him that others were uncomfortable. So go ahead tell God what hurts. He won't turn you away "for our high priest is able to understand our weaknesses. When he lived on earth, he was tempted in every way that we are, but he did not sin. Let us then feel very sure that we can come before God's throne where there is grace" (Hebrew. 4:15-16)

To save the host from public ridicule... A marriage feast was a very important event. Because of this, they were often scheduled just after the harvest so there would be large supplies of everything needed for the party. For the host to run out of anything brought disgrace on the new couple and the family.

"Honor" was a very important commodity in the ancient Middle East. The father would have lost any prominence he had, in town and in the synagogue. The new groom would have started his formal "adult life" with a dark cloud looming over him. By quietly providing what was lacking, Jesus showed his disciples a glimpse of who he was and that he cared deeply about those around him.

Apparently 2000 years ago the wine tasted bad, more like vinegar. So not having much water to share he figured "Hmm if I turn this water to wine they won't drink so much"

The actual beverage we all know as wine, does not exactly mean the drukened beverage we make it out to be. The word wine could simply mean just a brewed beverage such as coffee or tea. even if it was alcoholic, does not mean they became drunck from it. In ancient times alcoholic beverages were knowned to be knicknamed "spirits" because it always seemed to uplift the mind and body.

I've always wondered that too. Here's what I found:

It was at his mother's request. The celebrants at the wedding had run out of wine and Mary, knowing what her son was capable of, told him to do it. He tried to say no; that it wasn't yet time, but she ignored him and kind of forced him into it. See John 2:1-11.
(We all know how hard it is to say no to our mothers.)
