To indoctrinate people to a religion.

The church holds services that are geared towards working people up emotionally so they are more receptive to the things being said. This can be seen in an extreme form in "evangelical" churches that get people to fall for faith healing, speaking in tongues, snake handling, hysterical laughter, and other nonsense. In milder forms, it just consists of sermons and songs that stir feelings of pity, guilt, love and other emotions, depending on the focus.

There are also group bonding events such as pancake breakfasts and other group activities to enforce the social aspect. In some neighborhoods, church becomes so integrated into the social life of the community that you are ostracized if you don't participate.

From a christian point of view: "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God..."(the body of Christ referring symbolically to the members of His church) i.e. - the purpose of the church is to help us grow closer to perfection, learn about God and what He would have us do, and to unify and edify(uplift) us.

If you have no religious beliefs, in most churches you are welcome to come in and watch and listen. Sometimes just the quiet reverence lifts a burden you may be feeling.

To tell the world about the good news of Jesus Christ, his death burial and resurrection, and that by believing in him you can have everlasting life.
Repent and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, for the promise is to you and to your children and all those who are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call!
