It seems by the answers, everyone has an opinion but no one has stated the obvious. The LAW.
It is written law that you can not be a commit homosexual acts in the military. UCMJ Article 125.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue, is only a policy on how the law will be administered. It did not change the law.
Clinton found out the hard way that he could not change it, and Hilliary will not be able to change it either.
Since the UCMJ is part of the Manuals for Courts-Martial, which is part of the U.S. Constitution. It takes a 2/3 majority vote of both houses to make a change. That is not going to happen anytime in the foreseeable future.
So for now the policy will stand.
There have always been, and always will be gays in the military. They are not allowed to serve openly. If they do their job, follow orders, and obey policy, they will be able to serve their country honorable and left alone.
Open their mouths, or are seen in a compromising act, they are gone.

point out the damage heterosexuals are doing to the military. all the scandals involving attacks on female military personnel. perhaps get something organised then use this to point out that the problem does not come from them. once facts on this collected and supported this should dispense with any idea gays are unsuitable. also a point a person has to ask is why non gays can be openly non gay but others are made to keep it secret. then a good recruiting program perhaps an elite DOD force called The Theban Regiment after the soldiers in ancient Thebes who were said to be gay just take it a bit further and make it into a regiment or some other number. this might make things worse but would dispell the ''can't'' fight image. so posters with Join The Theban Regiment an elite force that is ready to defend the U.S on U.S. soil at any time . build up the image of an elite fighting force much like Hollwood does with the Special Forces,Delta Force, and Marines. then all that remains is to turn it into a unit which operates only on U.S. soil to oppose an incoming attack. this would imply it was to be for defense purposes only. course thought gays were no longer an issue shows how wrong a person can be. make documentaries like Michael Moore or vidios on a web site with the name mentioned quite often and the idea a message like this ''now that there is a force like this everyman will be wishing he was gay''. then get Anne Coulter to say something about it this should get ample attention quite easily.find her website and mentionthe idea to her this has a good chance of working given her reputation. see if her stance can be adjusted with this if not this would provide good ammunition. first before idea used ask gays what they think. also ask Anne Coulter if she would like to join this force were it to exist.

I was in the Navy and knew several guys that were Gay. Everyone knew they were gay, but because they never brought it up or tried to claim their sexuality was the reason for some issue or another and most importantly because they did their jobs well, they never got kicked out.

I understand your question, but think it could be worded better. You say "serve openly". This makes me picture gay military members acting in an openly gay manner while on duty. Wearing their uniforms differently, trying to use their Gayness as an excuse for being disciplined or to try to get out of some duty. THIS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care if you have sex with your 1st cousin and a pig, as long as you do your job and act in a professional manner. By professional manner I do not mean prancing around the office calling everyone sugar.

So the question should be when will gays be allowed to serve without fear of being thrown out.

I have gay friends and have seen the behaviorisms that are rampant in the gay communities. An orderly and effecient Military could not operate well with these behaviors being exhibited in the open.

There are plenty of straight people that exhibit certain behaviors that have to be dealt with as well, so don't think I am singling out gay people. Just stating that it is OK to straighten out the behaviors of straight people, but how big of a can of worms would we be opening if we allowed Gays to serve openly. How would the Military distinguish between normal bad behavior and gay bad behavior? Just that the military would have to deal with, "it is not fair to gays" over and over and over....when would that end?

I got stalked by a female I mean literally stalked by a gay female, Up to that point I was pretty tolerant. It got to the point I couldn't shower without her being there. My first sarg was gay she laughed at me.
I did not appreciate or accept the fact that she was allowed this behavior. I was and always be heterosexual. I had no problems with gay people and knew many of them in the military. Until it became personal.
Then i got mad. I had no right to be stalked by anyone, I had done nothing wrong to encourage this behavior. I had repeatedly told her to leave me alone that I was "straight"
Nothing worked. I finally appealed to my "General" I got moved.
It was horrendous. Nothing would alleviate my problem until I got some Male "b_all_s and did it myself.
Eventually both the 1st sarge and her were brought up on charges.
If they actively pursue someone that they find attractive but yet that person rejects them, and feels a bit violiated then no they shouldn't serve.
You aren't in the Military for sex. To join it because you think you'll meet likeminded people is a mistake.
You join the military to become you feel a calling.

Answer this question; why is it all right for a man to be forced to shower with men who are sexually attracted to other men, but it's absolutely unthinkable for a woman to be forced to shower with men who are sexually attracted to women ?*

Once you've answered that to peoples contentment all you have to do is end gay bashing in America

If you can do these two things, the DoD will be a lot more inclined to allow gays in the military

I'm glad you asked me that question. There is an answer, and it's simpler than you might think, but it takes faith. Do you have faith? Do you believe?

Okay. Draw out every dollar you have in the bank. Borrow all that you can from all of your friends. Take all that money to the nearest casino, walk up to a craps table and put it all on double six. You will win if you have enough faith. Leave it on double six. You will win again, if you have the faith. Leave it on one more time, and then collect your winnings.

The media will be following you by this time, and when they put the microphone in your face, say "I did this to make the DoD let openly gay people serve in the military!"

Well, those headlines will force them to change their ways.

Trust me. This will work, if you have enough faith.

Maybe I'm born in the wrong era. Although I would judge a man/woman by their hard work and character most people in the military would not want them around. (Of course the gay people still will serve....No one will know they are gay) I was one of those who was narrow minded back in the 60s and 70s. Now I just say live and let live. I was part of the problem 35 years ago. Not proud of that I can say for sure.

Aren't there far more important things for an intelligent, energetic person to work on? Aren't there far greater wrongs to right and lives to improve? The world needs wonderful, passionate people like you to postively influence other people.
Don't mistake my comments for any type of gay bashing. That's not what I'm doing. I just think you could work on something that could really make a difference instead of this.

Elect a supermajority of people who agree with you in both Houses of Congress. They can pass a bill directing the DoD to allow gays to serve openly. Should the President veto the bill, they can override him and enact it into law.

(I think this is a pretty tall order to achieve by yourself, but voting for candidate who agree with you would be a good first step.)

Demand the military cut expenses by having two men to a bunk. If Hillary gets into office, you can rest assured gays will be allowed to serve openly.
