Hello. I am wanting a new deer hunting rifle. I was wanting a NEF. I was mostly interested in the 270 and 25-06. (but im open to any suggestions) I would like to know how they shoot if you have shot one or know somebody who owns one or you own one, please give me all the feedback about it you have. I have read mixed reviews but most of them were positive. I hunt whitetail mostly in the woods. sometimes in an old road or open area. please just tell me what you think about NEF, a 25-06 and a 270. Which one do you think would be better for whitetail deer? O ya, dont tell me that NEF doesnt have a 25-06, because they do. Which one do you think is a better deer gun? 25-06 or 270???

I've hunted White tale deer with a Remington 700 ADL I bought new in 1974 with spectacular results. I've also hunted White tale deer with a .270 Winchester (a Weatherby Vanguard) and the deer can't tell the difference. They just... Drop. Both of my rifles have 24" barrels as they are earlier model rifles. I just prefer the .25-06 so that's the one I'd recommend.

Best.

Both calibers are just a 30-06 case sized down; and you can't go wrong with either one. I would pick the 270 as you can have a bit more bullet weight and wind bucking ability. You might even take a look at the 30-06 caliber and rediscover the wheel. You can buy mucho military ammo for one and plink to your hearts content. It does everything the 25-06 or 270 can do; only it does it even better and at much less expense. And, if you decide to hunt bigger game you will already have the rifle to do so. The two best calibers of all time are the 30-06 and 8mm Mauser; and are still the yardsticks by which all others are measured.

well........the NEF has the 25:06 in a 26 inch barrel which could cut down on the muzzle report otherwise most of their guns are 22 inch barrels.

I don't see much 25-06 ammo out there at the gun stores I stop in......

consider a 30-30 ammo's fairly common all over the place and when you go to hunt try the new hot Horndary lever evolution 30-30 ammo, it turns the 30-30 to a good 300 yard gun.

consider a 30-06, very versatile cartridge in many loads.....
just get yourself a good scope whatever you choose........

and last but not least they have a barrel refitting service so you can add new calibers to your gun take it down to a 22 hornet (somewhat cheaper ammo) or up to 45-70 and when your done with that back to your 30-30.

places and things for you to check out

1.NEF website and learn about their barrel refitting process.
2.greybeardoutdoor.com forums (some NEF fanatics there)
3.check out the ammo prices before buying

I'm sure someone will tell you, you won't get sub MOA groupings with a NEF and go with a T/C contender but don't worry.......

I have NEF and I happy with the ammo grouping.

Craig Boddington is a former marine who wrote an article in a hunting magazine once about the top best deer cartridges. His top favorite was the .270. The .270 is often referred to as the best all-around deer cartridge. The 25-06 is a good gun, but the .270 does a better job as far as I'm concerned.
NEF makes fantastic firearms at affordable prices. I say go for it!

I would buy a 270 WSM. They are amazing, they have very little kick and they have ballistics similar to that of a 7 MM or a 300 Win. Mag. They seem like they are a great all around rifle for most big game in North America. They will certainly do a number on any whitetail on earth. But all in all they are both good choices, I would just upgrade the 270 to the short magnum.

.Really need to decide what you will be using it for in the future. For whitetail hunting either will work fine. Just happen to own one of each.

If-in the future you might be using it for hunting out west. Then go for the 270. Better knock down power at a longer range for bigger game. I have several (to many really) different calibers of rifles. Ranging from the little 22 to the very large magnums. Then I like shooting as a sport. But if only a choice to own just one, it would be the 270. Just read the ballistics for the various types of shells you can easily buy. For smaller game too larger.

i like the single shot action, because it is light and you shouldn't need (nor will you ever get many) second shots at a deer. it is cheap, with already a scope mounted on it.
now, as for caliber,
i would definitely get the .270 win. both are .30/06 cartridges necked down to .27 cal and .25 cal, respectively. so both of them shoot flat, fast and both can take down whitetail. i like the .270, simply because it can be used for black bear. the .25/06 is smaller and should only be used for whitetail/varmint.
the .270 can be used for whitetail, black bear, and if you use the 130 grain bullets, it shoots flat enough to shoot varmints if you don't have a varmint gun.
i like the Handy rifle, and i think its a great choice for what you need.

The NEF is a good rifle. It is barely over $200 in just about any popular caliber. I have never shot one, nor do I know anyone who has one, but I can tell you to go with the .270 Win. here. It is a classic deer cartridge and nothing can beat it's performance. It seems like a pretty sturdy single shot. Best of luck to you in the field.

I would use the 270 over the '06 every time, but then, I would use the 308 over the 270. The 308 is a hard hitting, accurate round, available everywhere, in a huge range of bullet heads to cover any situation from varmints to bear, and reloading is easy. And don't forget, cheap surplus ammo for plinking!
Buy a Ruger M77 in 308 and never look back!

I'd chose a .270 over a 25-06 any day. That's just my personal preference of the two. I just bought a Handi Rifle myself and got it in .308. I have shot a Rem. 700 in 7mm mag for almost 10 years and finally realized that it wasn't necessary. There wasn't anything wrong with it, I just didn't need that much gun to kill a deer. I know several people who have New England rifles and they are more than pleased with their performance. As far as which caliber is for you, you'll just have to sit down with a ballistics chart and see what makes you happy. (.308, .308, .308, .308)
Check out the chart below. It's a good one.
