I recently joined a choir, and I always come home from rehearsals feeling great, both mentally and physically. Is it the singing that does it, or something related to being in a choir, like the sense of "belonging", or the different breathing that I've been doing, or just the fact that I've had a laugh with some friends, or something else?

Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting.

Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being.

Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour

Regular exercising of the vocal cords can even prolong life. Life can also be prolonged because singing promotes both a healthy heart and an enhanced mental state. It’s a great way to keep in shape because you are exercising your lungs and heart. Not only that, your body produces ‘feel good’ hormones called endorphins, which rush around your body when you sing. It’s exactly the same when you eat a bar of chocolate. The good news with singing is that you don’t gain any calories! Not only can it increase lung capacity, it improves posture, clears respiratory tubes and sinuses, and can increase mental alertness through greater oxygenation. It even tones the muscles of your stomach and back, that is if you’re singing correctly.

Another benefit is that it can keep you looking young as you’re gently exercising the muscles in your face. So, forget all those posh and expensive anti-aging creams, try singing instead!!!!

Hope this answers your question xxx

The medical community has used music as therapry for a very long time. It's something about the sound and the joy you feel when you hear the music. They've even found recently that it can help autistic children relate better. I have a big sign that says-Without music, life would be a mistake. Certainly singing in a group is good for you and maybe the breathing has something to do with it, but basically, it's the music.

I cannot quote any medical evidence but as a mature acting student I had singing lessons every week and always had a sense of euphoria after singing. I believe the breathing is the key but the sense of cameraderie in a choir will be an added bonus.

After a choir I went to broke up, I felt really low for a while. I'm sure that its the sense of belonging and the fun you have with your mates at choirs that make you feel so good, coz I sing all the time and I never feel quite as good as I did after a practice.

Singing in a choir or group at a karaoke lounge lifts up the spirit, improves your breathing, rhythm, pitching, tone and range of your voice. Karaoke-singing once a week during the week-end allows you to destress with some drinks, tit-bits, laughter, etc with friends. You get to try many favourite songs and if you are good, you could sign up for various singing competitions. Wonderful hobby---why didn't i discover it earlier!!!???

I think it might be to do with taking in extra oxygen. But it's great isn't it? I haven't sung anything for ages. Right, anyone know a good choir I can join?

Yes - professional singers can live decades longer than others - even singers that smoke. I like to point that out when I'm trying to get people to sing along.
