I will be graduating shortly from the Ohio State University with a degree in accounting. I plan on taking the Becker CPA review course and CPA exam after I graduate. I know there is a one year of accounting experience requirement but I don't have any accounting work experience though. My plan was to pass the exam first before trying to work just so I can focus on it much more. My question is that can I still sit for the CPA exam even though I do not have any accounting work experience yet? Then after I pass it, I can work and obtain my certificate and license. Hopefully, passing it will increase my chances of landing a job with the Big 4. Thanks :)

I took the exam in the fall of 91 and at that time you didn't need the experience first. I had over 15 years experience and I believe it made the test much easier. I did the Becker class and the exam wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I wasn't good at governmental accounting so took wild guesses but at that time it was pared with cost accounting that I got perfect answers on.
The test is hard and you do need to study every minute for months and take a review class but about 5% make it first try so it is do able.

I agree with SuzeY but want to elaborate on my own experience. You are aware by now of the sections obviously. You do not need to take them all at one time. I would suggest saving the auditing portion for after you gain some experience if you can. The other portions could be taken now while you have just spent 4 years studying the stuff. Real life auditing experience really helps put the questions into perspective. Obviously it can be done without the experience, but it helps. SuzeY nailed it with the experience per state. Check yours.
