We get questions like this all the time and the answers from various posters is always the same. We need you to give us an approximate budget and our tastes may differ from yours. There are countless brands we can recommend and prices vary in the extreme. If you would like a great home system consisting of Mark Levinson amps and processors driving Wilson Audio speakers you can spend up to a half million dollars. On the other hand, you can spend two or three hundred dollars for a cheap home theater in a box system. I always say that if I had to replace my audio system today, my budget would allow for something like a Denon receiver with M&K speakers, but that is my budget and my tastes in sound. Your budget and tastes may vary. I suggest you do a lot of reading in A/V magazines and on the Internet. Visit as many high-end stores as you can. Bring your own CDs and DVDs with you so you can make legitimate comparisons. When you get a budget in mind and have narrowed down your choices you may want to ask about these here. Some general advice in closing:

Watts are not nearly as important as quality. Different brands measure watts differently and the bottom line is sound, not numbers.

Bose is a low-end product marketed and priced as though it were a high end one. No true audiophile will recommend this brand to you. Other brands at that price point sound much better.

Beware the scam brands on places like EBay and Craigslist. Do some research on these in advance. Search for articles on the "white van speaker scam." There are MANY brands involved. Perhaps the brands we get the most questions about are Kirsch (not Klipsch), Divinci (not DaVinci outdoor speakers), and Genesis Labs (not Genesis).

If you would like a better quality system spend the money on a better Receiver and DVD Player and buy the speakers when your budget allows.
