My dad was reading in a devotional book the other day that talked about how when we come to Christ, we are supposed to 'leave all our ambitions, and follow Him.' That has really been bothering me lately. I have always given myself a hard time about my running, I keep myself from doing it alot, coming up with wierd arguments to keep myself out of it, to keep myself unmotivated. I don't know why, its just that every time I start to have some level of success in cross country, I feel 'this shouldn't be this easy, and I start to doubt myself. "do I really deserve to be good at running?" "if so, then why?" "Why bother with a sport, all I could possibly be going for is personal glory." and then, of course I start doubting whether or not i'm even a christian, and I get all mixed up. Basically, I'm trying to settle this whole thing in my mind. I really want to run, and run to win, and so does my family, I just don't know how to get past my mind games. So, can I keep my ambitions?

Of course he does. Keep your ambitions, there is much good and right to be done in the world. He doesn't want a bunch of mindless do nothing zombies! Achieve, succeed, but do well and good. He gave us intelligence and free will. Remember the parable of the talents, one was given 10 and another 5 and another 1. When the Master returned the ones with 10 and 5 returned double what they had been given and the Master was happy, but the 1 buried and and did nothing with it and when the Master returned he said you should of at least put it in the bank and earned interest with it and took it away from him and give it to the one with 10. No matter what our gifts we should use it to improve ourselves and those around us, not bury it in the dirt! God wants you to win too. Have fun.

God channels our ambitions according to his plan and purpose for our lives. God uses people in all walks of life. There are plenty of Christian athletes and if God has gifted you in that area then it could be that He will use you to witness to other athletes or something like that. Hold on to your ambitions with a loose grasp. If God wants you to do something else then He will let you know about it. In the mean time since there is nothing wrong with what you are doing give God the praise and keep on running!

Sounds like one of those "Oswald Chambers" devotional books. I have found so many false teachings in those books, yet some people hold them like they're the Bible itself or something.

The ambitions we are to lose, according to the Bible, is the ambition to be like the world, and to be rich. Running has nothing to do with those.

Run. Run and glorify the Lord with the talent He gave you to do it. Keep that ambition :)
