I can join as an officer, but my friends tell me if you have a graduate degree, you should find a job instead. Also, I have dual citizenship and can join the Canadian army also.

Is it a good idea if you've already paid for your college degree yourself? Thanks

Look man, I am 26 with a degree and I just joined the Navy. Do not join the Army, unless you are looking to fight, if you want quality of life go either for the Air Force or the Navy.
With a graduate degree you would be sent to OCS (officer career school ). The benefits are amazing for an active officer, you get BAH (basic housing allowance) where the branch will cut you a check every month to help you pay for rent ( Amount is based on location where you are stationed, and if you have any dependants), you receive subsistinence allowance ( around 300 dollars a month to purchase food ), plus money here and there. The medical benefits are insane to where to have a cesarian baby will cost an officer $ 35 dollars (thirty-five dollars).
Plus your regular salary, if you come in as a O-1 here is your pay :

So you receive every single thing I mentioned above, plus your base pay of 2469.30 a month ans a O-1, and more, you can always pick a job related to your field or closely related, and use it as experience for your resume if you decide not to follow carreer.
And you know you would get a job above any civilian if you had military experience!

good luck and think about it!

Very good points by jstor16. You should also look at how much real experience is required for a good job in your field. A military hitch is a wonderful place to get real world experience. Any large corporation also views experience as a military officer very favorably as far as fast track management. It can be just the thing that sets you apart from others. Asking the question again with the details of what your degree is in might get you more solid advise.

The Army is a job. Plus if you join as an officer, go to OCS and serve you'll receive a lot more benefits and higher pay than enlisted. It also offers the added benefit of travel to different countries. You also get the honor of holding down one of the proudest jobs available - serving your country with pride!!! On top of that you can continue your college studies and the military will pay for most of it!!!

I would say do your part and serve your country, weather it be Canada or America. There are too many people sitting around and talking sh** watching us do it all. You don't want to look back 40 years and tell your grand son what you didn't do during the war do you?
As for the branch, do your research. As a former Marine recruiter I will give you this non bias answer. There is a branch of service just for you. Don't be influenced by all the money some branches toss at you. Look at what else you can gain besides money.
I don't do this for the money. I do it for the title and the pride

short answer: maybe. long answer: probably not. not every MOS comes with CLRP as an option. the max payout varies.. could be as low as $10K. should you try and seek a commission, you would not qualify for CLRP at all. the good news is with a 4 year degree you can enlist immediately as an E4(SPC) which will bump up your base pay. Military service can defer or even forgieve student loans in certain circumstances plus by enlisting you'd earn the Post 9/11 GI Bill which will help pay for grad school

It depends on what that graduate degree is. Is it in Engineering, or History? Philosophy? A liberal arts Masters Degree may not help you as much as you think in the civilian world.
You may also make much more money as an officer then a civilian, due to pay raises over the last few years. Check out the pay charts.

You have the graduate degree, figure it out. I have a high school diploma, I joined the Navy, did my four years honorably, now I am working. Very glad I served my country first.

Why are you asking us? YOU should know better. If you don't even have good decision-making skills how are you going to be a good officer in the Army? How are you going to lead if you can't even make up your own mind here? Don't get me wrong here, I'm not trying to critisise you, but ask yourself first: "Do I have what it takes to be an officer in the Australian Army? Am I capable to lead, to excel?" If both your answers are yes, then go ahead and apply for officer entry! Good luck, with whatever decision you make.
