when you get home, don't greet him for 10 minutes, just ignore him, he'll calm down in that time and hopefully wont jump anymore.

I agree with the positive reinforcement approach ( turning your back). But there is always a healthy balance between positive and negative reinforcement. As a last resort there is the old school, tried and true method of kneeing the dog in the chest. I'm not talking about a karate kick, I'm talking about just enough to get the point across that jumping on people is a bad idea. Of course if it's a small dog that will not work...........consistency is always the key in dog training, some dogs are extremely smart and some take a little to catch on. Good luck!

Jumping Up on People
Race Foster, DVM
Marty Smith, DVM
Holly Nash, DVM, MS
Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.
Dogs often jump up on people. They stand on their rear legs with their front paws on the person. This is normal behavior for a young dog. Puppies of wild canids do it all the time. They jump up on each other or their parents. Puppies of our domestic dogs do the same. Jumping up serves both as play and to teach them how to act as a predator or how to challenge other pack members in the dominance hierarchy. In some homes, puppies are encouraged to jump up on their owners. Obviously, this is a mistake. While it may be seen as cute or as a sign of affection while the puppy is small, it can be terrifying when done by a 100-pound Rottweiler.
Numerous owners complain about their dogs doing this. They shout "No" or "No, get down" or any of a wide range of phrases that make perfect sense to them but that are not understood by the dog. They scream and punish the animals but little seems to help. Some of the peoples actions may excite the dog even more, and when this occurs, nothing is learned.
In all honesty, this behavior can be eliminated completely in a week or less, and as usual, we do not think you need to say anything. You need to communicate to the pet that this is not acceptable behavior and should not be done, but do not waste words or try to make up new phrases to correct it.
Body block
As the animal starts to jump up on you, turn sideways and either extend your leg or lean over and with your hip give a body block so that the dog never even gets her paws on you. You see, once she has her front paws on you, she already got what she wanted (she won and you lost).
When the dog has all four feet on the floor, immediately squat down and give her attention. She will soon learn that by sitting quietly with all four feet on the floor she will get what she wants.
Too late
What if the dog surprised you and got her feet on you before you had a chance to block her. Do NOT push her away with your hands. Many dogs think that is play. Some people lightly step on the toes of one of the animal's rear feet, but not enough to hurt the dog. All you want to do is make something that is fun suddenly uncomfortable to them. Say nothing. Do not waste "No" on this kind of behavior. Remember, you are not going to step down on the toes and make the animal yip in pain.
Done consistently, either of these actions will eliminate jumping behavior.

dog obedience would help.
the other thing is don't bring your knee up until after he jumps and then bring it up into his chest ( just enough to let him know) and at the same time say no jump the other is step on his back toes and give the same response.
The whole idea with dog obedience is to train him to do either a sit or down as well as getting a better control of your dog.
it is a good bonding tool and a good way to teach him you are the dominate one.
Good Luck

As soon as he starts to jump, turn around, stop talking and playing with him and give him the cold shoulder. Really. When he settles down, resume the play and just keep repeating the turn around/ignore behavior until he settles. You may find yourself constantly turning your back on him and ignoring him until he gets the idea. As you are practicing this, imagine him doing what you want him to do, and when he actually is doing what you want, make sure to reward him with a small treat and a pet. Pet what you like, ignore what you don't and you will end up with a great dog.

every time the dogs jumped up, purely turn your lower back and walk away. This we could the dogs comprehend that if it jumps up, it won't obtain any interest from you. Then, while the dogs has calmed down, kneel to the dogs point and compliment it. This tells the dogs that it will in basic terms get interest while calm.

To ALL those that brought the RIGHT answer to this dog behavior problem.......You guys know your stuff. The Ignoring ,saying the word OFF, Lifting your knee and all Positive ways of training your dog. Congratulations !!!! to those that have the knowledge and want to train in a HUMANE way and not in a cruel and evil way, such as beating the dog,for not getting what you want from him.
I do have a question to the person that started this answer page; Are you greeting you dog with a lot of excitement in your voice? Don't worry,I'm not judging you...i would be a hypocrite, I also fail all the time in GREETING my dogs in the RIGHT WAY.....and when you don't things right you are automatically encouraging the unwanted behaviors.

Tell him "off" and put your hand palm out towards him. Use your knee if necessary to actually get him off you. Repeat as necessary (and believe me, it will be). Praise the dog once he does as you say. Also, just a side note, but if you do take him for training, they'll tell you that "down" means to lay down, while "off" means to not jump. It's a small thing, but you don't want to tell him "down" now and have him be confused if he ends up with a trainer.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/q7CMV
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

the answer is yes.you can stop this behavior.and relatively quickly ,to.i have a boxer female who done this when she first came here.
my method of stopping this behavor took less than a day to correct in her.
each time your dog goes to jump up at you,put your palm out faceing the dog and say in a sharp tone no.keeping your hand at or on the dogs head or chest.when you put your hand down.if the dog tries to jump again repeat the hand forward and a sharp NO.once the dog is calm doing as you want give it a treat.then each time you put your hand up the dog will begin to sit.thats when you give the treat and say very good, thank you.and praise him/her for listening to the command you brought forth with a simple hand gester.
good luck.
