My guess is that for one the main purpose is utility (military), hence keeping the age young is useful. The other is to curb accidents etc, hence keeping the age high is good. But one can certainly argue the hypocrisy of it!!!

SGT D: You seem to be on a high horse with military/police work. You don't have to be in the military to serve your country. I think that is a myth. Do civilian jobs not serve anyone? Having a job is having a job. Shouldn't matter if it's military or not. Get rid of all the civilian jobs and see how society runs. We'd be back in the stone age instantly. For example, without civ jobs there wouldn't be the internet here for you to even post on.

I agree with SGT.D Only the 18 year old in the military should be able to drink, frankly if I am willing to risk my life for my country, I think the least they can do is buy me a drink.

They want you sober when you go to war. This question has been asked since I was 18 and probably before. We also included the voting issue though. Havent been 18 for close to 40 years.

That old saying it wielded like a knife! Usually by loser teenagers who's farthest thing on their minds is actually joining the military! I think that if you want to serve your country, you should be able to drink at 18. All others should wait until 21.

Because when the drinking age was 18 there were tons of drunk driving deaths. Simple as that.

Because drinking was killing too many of the 18 year olds, and they needed them around for the war.

because going to war for your country is honorable, whereas drinking yourself stupid is not. theres a big difference between the 2.

because older people are hypocrites, ( i am 50 y.o.) but i was young once...some people seem to forget that.
