I don't agree with Bronteheights: Osteomyelitis is a bone disease and, you don't say what kind. I gather you don't know so, if it's bacteria, then it could be contagious and that could be bad according to again, what type, there are more then several.
Until you find out what the exact diagnosis is, I would worry about it. Then you can take the proper steps.
The bacteria wanders in the body usually settling in the long bones. This is in younger people.

In general, no. Unless the infection is known, or highly suspected, to be MRSA.
The bacteria that generally cause osteomyelitis aren't that dangerous to healthy persons. The people handling the patient will use standard, universal precautions, but there's no danger to a roommate.

Please see Google search on Mycobacterium Kansaii and AIDS. One factor in the rising TB trend in both the developed and the developing world is HIV infection, which weakens the immune system. One third of deaths of those who are HIV-positive are TB related. Those with HIV are 100 times more likely to develop TB than other members of the population. Other people who are at risk from the disease include those with diabetes, the malnourished, alcoholics, and IV drug users. Mycobacterium kansasii, which belongs to the same species as that of TB, can cause life-threatening infections in people with compromised immune systems.
