Just listen to your parents... you'd probably won't take it out for walks or pick up it's poop. Your parents know you better than any of us and they don't want to get stuck with those duties.
All dogs are the same in some respects.

HAving a dog is a little like having a kid. Minus the fact that you can leave the dog unattened where you can't a kid, they need a lot of stuff. They have to have shots, they have to have food and water. They have to ahve a collar and leash and toys and shampoo and somewhere to bathe them. They ahve to have flea, tick and heartworm prevention, the list just goes on and on. And if they eat s/thing bad or just plain old get sick there are more vet bills to think of.
YOu need to listen to your parents. They are obviously not willing and you are not ready to take care of an animal by yourself. No dog is low maintence, they all need everything plus that is listed above, big or small. Oh, plus they all take a lot of time and energy to train, housetrain, train to do tricks, train to stay in the yard or on a leash or whatever.

Almost all dogs bark a lot and the vet bills are outrageous for any breed (I know, I just spent nearly $400 dollars on a vet visit and meds for my dog that caught an illness.) Plus the food, toys, grooming, etc. will cost a pretty penny. All dogs require a lot of maintence. You'll need to exercise the animal daily, clean up after them, play with them, groom/bath them, give medications on a regular basis, feed them, teach them to follow your rules, and the list just goes on and on.
If you are able to convince your parents otherwise, I have found that mixed breeds tend to stay fairly healthy (that's a major generalization, as any dog can have problems.) You could take a look at the shelters to adopt....lots of sweet dogs there.

My favorite breed of little dog is a Schipperke (skipper key)
They are very independent, easy to care for, little clowns to watch play, just as happy in a 50 room mansion as they are in a one room apartment.
www.canismajor.com/dog/index.html has a good description of the breed. www.akc.org has one as well with a picture.
The puppies are cute as can be, they look like little bear cubs.
Even though they look like they need a lot of grooming, they don't, they are wash and wear dogs.

A bisson friez (sp??) are easy to take care of and are smart. They also don't have a history of problems with their back or joints, etc. They have quite long life expectances and are great all around. They are also small dogs. Look them up on the internet for more info.

no dog is simple. i have a mini-dach, and he's cost about $2000 for vet bills (shots and sick visits), and much more in food, time and energy. i love him to death, but dogs are a lot of work, and if you aren't paying for everything, it's not up to you to decide.

A beagle is a good choice for a pet. It needs a yard for it to run around in, so it's not for apartments. They're really friendly, and they're fairly easy to take care of. Here are some sites about them and how to take care of them:

All dogs need maintenance, could get ill, or could get injured, if you can't afford vet bills then it's best to wait until you're older to get a dog.
