Well, it doesn't have to be for "kids" only...adults can participate too.

Also, obviously written by someone who leans painfully to the left.

Abstinence only programs have been around for about 5 years or less depending on the location. Given that sex-ed with contraception education has been around for 30+ years I'd say we haven't really given it a chance. Not to mention, no matter how much kids get from school....parents make a huge difference. If they're getting abstinence only in school but Mom & Dad let them watch the "spice" channel, or take their kids out for contraceptives (which is viewed as very progressive these days), or do not practice sexual abstinence themselves...then the kids aren't going to get the message.

Abstinence is a good lesson and one all can learn. It takes the schools and parents working together...just like in most educational programs.

What do children do after Mother's day? Do they not love their moms after that? Is Mother's day the only day for moms to be loved? I think many say no. Similar for Valentine Day, Wedding anniversaries, etc.

Thus, the abstinence day is not the day to stay abstinence. For example, I would consider it to be a day to celebrate another year of abstinence. By the way, we are not talking about monks and nuns. So, my understanding of abstinence is a lifestyle where sex is only between a person and his/her legal opposite-sex spouse. Thus, for those who have not had this person defined yet, it means no sex.

To answer your question, it depends on how the idea of abstinence day is brought across. I hope it is brought across in a way where by kids will continue or begin their next stint of abstinence life journey, which is just by practicing a normal healthy lifestyle.

I will post further comments on the article of that link in your question in my blog at http://back2nature.blogspot.com/search/label/abstinence.

I"m a "fundie", and even I think abstinence day is ridiculous. Either a person wants to obey the Lord and preserve themselves, or they don't. But whatever.

Maybe if they make every day a weird ideology day. There's the National Day of Prayer already, so you could add...

National Day of Post-911 Mindset
National Day of Ten Commandments
National Day of Anti-Gay

etc etc

It's a great place to meet other sexually pent up teens. What a great place to pick up a sex partner for a teen!
