When you purchase a new PC - Say from Dell - They used to have a Recovery Disk - This disk had the OS on it has well as other programs and all the drivers - All you had to do was put it in, boot off it and the PC was restored to like it was when you first got it.

Now they are putting the Recovery Software on a special partition of the Hard Drive.

In some cases the retailer will provide an original Microsoft Disk of the OS IF REQUESTED.

The reason they do this is most people would not know what to do with the original disk anyway. The recovery disk makes it easy for most people to reinstall the OS.

As long as you have the Operating System Product ID code you can use anyones disk. What you are really purchasing is the Product ID Code.

Example: If you had Vista Home Premium on your PC and did not have a disk but you did have the Product ID key on a sticker on the side of the PC, You could borrow my copy of Vista Home Premium and use it.

THE PRODUCT ID KEY is NOT on the CD.

not necessarily, cuz most systems purchased in the last 10 years or so already have the OS installed and all you have to do the first time you turn it on is to configure user accounts. The purpose is because it makes it easier for 12 year olds getting their first computer, to college students, its easier for 40 year old parents who are getting their first computer, even 75 year old grandparents. The disc they give you serves only as a tool in case something goes wrong.

The disc you have performs 2 functions, it's both the recovery disc and the OS in one
