I know my state has all of that information in computer systems that the government can access. I'm sure they can do the same thing in other states.

If you work, your SS # tags your income for the IRS. Since the IRS and the SSA share information, you should stay strictly legal.
As for tracking "under the table" income, the SSA has a much harder time. I wouldn't talk about it to anyone, especially on the phone or via e-mail, as the government regularly snoops on these things nowadays.

yes but mostly i think they go by you telling them all the facts other wise they have to wate till some one reports the extra money you made at least thats the way i here its done anyway. for exsample if you where to be living with some one and they were paying halve the bills but you report that you are paying all of them then no one will know any difference except you and them not that i am saying you should do that of course me i am still looking for my solemate and i know things will change when i get married because i am on it to .but thats ok because what will happen is my money will go up if she is on a check herself or not working but if she is working they will reduce my check my a percentage but thats ok as long as its enough for me to pay all the bills thats fine with me because i will have my wife next to me and thats the most important thing to me i hope this helps

Yes, your resources are checked in a number of ways.

Do NOT lie to the government if you are applying for benefits.

The penalties are VERY stiff.
