Consumer reports did a study on those types of air purifiers a couple of years ago, and said they are not up to all the advertising hype. None of them (including the Sharper Image models) were effective at clearing a room filled with smoke in any reasonable amount of time, nor could they take care of odors in a reasonable amount of time.

I don't own one, but neither would I own one.

I do own an ionizing air purifier (purchased for a nail salon from a distributor). It has both a fan and a variable high voltage setting. I can actually generate and circulate high levels of ozone if I choose (which is not good). This air purifier *is* good at cleaning the air if it is set for ozone just below the nose-detectable level. I can get the model number later and edit this message tomorrow.
