To be in constant communication with God. Not necessarily praying 24/7. But your thoughts are on God and with God...and you go to Him first with everything..thanksgiving, praise, problems... It's a heart condition...and one that I need to work on.

to answer this question you go to the context of the verse, in 1Thess 5:17 "Pray without ceasing."
it is an entire verse unto itself. It must be very important. The word pray here is the greek word preseuchomai`: meaning to pray to God; without ceasing, are the instructions given around this verse... an attitude of doing that which is best. But it is also as simple as "pray without ceasing"... to never break your communication with God, to never let anything come before your relationship and prayer to GOD.

It means to pray even when you have troubles, when things go wrong, when prayers arent answered in your time, and when you feel like giving up...Pray without ceasing...

When we dont pray we are saying we dont need Gods help in a round about way..

To pray with out ceasing...

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus
(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

As Christians we are called to live so filled with God's love that we can't help but let it pour into everything we do. I pray over everything. At work I pray, at home I pray, before I eat, when I start my car, when I go groceries shopping...everything in my day...I strive to fill with God's love. I don't always succeed but hey...I'm only human. The other thing that strikes me is this verse...is that everyday is supposed to be a celebration of God's love and prayer is a physical manifestation of this joy, love, grace...

It means to me, that I am in a constant state of prayer. That is to say, when I am driving to or from work, my mind is in tune with God and I am praying either asking for a good day or thanking for a good day and a safe journey. It means that every time I hear a siren, someone is in trouble, I pray for them right there and then for their safety and recovery. It means when I have a bad attitude and do or say something I should not, I ask for Gods forgiveness. That is what praying with out ceasing means to me.

Let's not stop praying,..for if "God wouldn't get up from bed and give us what we wanted in the name of friendship, HE surely would give us everything we need through persistence."
Many times when we felt our prayers were ignored, or unheard, or more so, "given the wrong answer",..we got up from our knees in disappointment. We ceased calling on HIM. Refrained from thanking HIM. We took things by our own way. If only we could realize the graciousness of God; that "there is NO unanswered prayer". That only sometimes, His reply was "No!",..and it was only because He knew what was more "better" for us.

You may know, this was the question that prompted the searching spiritual practice of the Russian Orthodox "pilgrim" in "The Way of a Pilgrim."

He adopted the Jesus prayer, linking the name of his Lord with his very breath and heartbeat.

Such practices of mindfulness can issue forth in a kind of perpetual realization of the on-goingness of God, the ever-present Life and Breath of Divine Nature in every thing and every moment whatsoever.

As others have suggested here, "to pray without ceasing" can be a state wherein the matter-of-fact miracle of your very existence is a continual, timeless prayer.

To "pray without ceasing" is to become fully conscious, so that every thought and action is an expression of one's connection with All That Is.

Which is terribly vague and esoteric-sounding.... so to put it more simply: When you're in "the flow" (you know the experience, right?), you're not outside yourself or outside of your experience. You're a seamless part of everything that is -- and it's all One. (And/or None, depending on your understanding of the concept. :o)

It's what Zen refers to as the "chop wood / carry water" form of awareness, in which the stuff of everyday behavior becomes a never-ceasing opportunity to Wake Up.

Make every day a conscious intention to increase that "flow" and then you can truly pray (i.e. be an instrument of creation) without ceasing. (And let me know if you get there, 'cuz I've got a long way to go!)

There are things that happen during the day that prompt me to pray. I hear a person arguing with their daughter on the phone, down the hall at work. I see something on TV that is terrible, an accident, someone is hurt, some disaster. I see a blind person walking down the street, feeling along with a cane. I ask God to forgive me for ever complaining about anything, I have my sight.

Like that. It goes on, constantly.
