I don't see how it could be possible.
I am thick skinned and jaded. I wish I wasn't because life made me that way.
I am sorry that you grew up being insulted. I htink you are an intelligent person with a great sense of humor. I like you!

I disagree with you.
Many people are sensitive and kind, and do not sling insults to others, and when they're insulted, they feel hurt.
I'm sensitive, and I'm not one to sling insults at people. On the contrary, all through my growing up years, from grades 3-11, I was HARRASSED in school and ridiculed for my eyes. (They're both very large, one is bigger than the other, and the bigger one had lots of scarring from multiple surgeries.) I was the butt of jokes every goddamn day of school. As a child, I was physically and emotionally abused. I've had clinical depression since age 9, and I'm 38 now. Since I know how it feels to be ridiculed, I make it a habit to think of how the other person feels, and I hold my tongue.
Am I perfect? No, of course not. Sometimes I lash out, and I do so because I'm human and imperfect. However, I don't make this a habit, and I'm very aware of it when I do it, and feel SOOOO GUILTY for doing it, that it's a rare occasion for me.
For the most part, I'm very benign and compassionate. Am I sensitive? Yes, I am. Less so with insults from strangers, very much with criticism from those closest to me.
Sensitive people are good people, don't make them out to be what they're not.

Same here. I have grown up being insulted, so I am immune to it. I agree that in today's society you have to develop a thick skin, or become a hermit and live in the mountains away from everyone. But even then, you have to make sure they don't find you there, cause then they will all laugh at you for being a hermit. lol.

No one should ever have to get used to verbal or any other kind of abuse, no matter who is doling it out to them. And I am sure you are intelligent enough to know that some people are sensitive. That is how they are born, just like I have brown eyes and and a tough disposition, they may have a sensitive disposition. Why should THAT get to you, hmm?

I'm kinda the same as you, I have a "thick skin" too I guess
people who grow up rich and in pampered environments sometimes take what people think of them WAY too seriously
the dirt and grime of working sh it jobs and dealing with everybody can harden you , yet more confident and sure of yourself, and WAY less effected by what strangers think of you, I don't even care what most of my family thinks of me

Blame Dr. Spock.
He instigated several generation of parental over-protectiveness that has weakened people all over the world and the US specifically.
Life is NOT easy. Only (mostly) the strong survive (long).
Most of all LIFE IS NOT FAIR.
A benevolent god cannot be omnipotent and omniscient. Its followers may claim that it is; it might claim to be. It might even believe that it is. It cannot.
The Creator/Universe is neutral.

hey now everyone, I went to a private christian school and to public school and hands down they were more mean and cruel in the private christian school, I never got sent to the principles office in public school to receive 10 wacks from a fiberglass paddle just for smiling at someone as happened to me in the private school, and in answer to your question, you can't reach adulthood without developing emotional distance to what people say.

First of all people shouldn't just be insulting each other, just because its done, doesn't mean it should be done. Yes, I agree people need to develop thicker skin because what people think about you on yahoo answers shouldn't be a huge deal.

I'm the one trying to make life better for others and always ends up getting hurt. But, like you, I'm used to it now.

It's possible if you elect not to allow yourself to become so hardened, that nothing can hurt you. I would not want to be that "shut off" a person. And I think that's basically what a person has to do to never be hurt; shut themselves off. You cannot feel love and not pain.
