When ever I get the chance to thank a military person for their service to this country, I do it. Every day when I go through the gate at Norfolk Naval Base, I show my ID card to the guard and thank him/her for his/her service. I was in McD's the other day on base and 2 young U.S. Marines (and a young lady..wife? gf? of one of them). I walked up to them as they were finishing up, saluted them (as a retiree I have earned the right to salute in civvies) and said, "Marines, thank you for serving our country! God bless you." The young lady got tears in her eyes. A friend of mine at church is a retired U.S. combat Marine Captain, Viet Nam vet. I stopped him the other day and said, "Ben, I don't think I've ever told you this." I paused, stood at MARINE attention and saluted him. "Welcome home, my warrior brother!" He grabbed me and hugged me and said,"Welcome home, to you, too, brother,"
My wife and I were in a large restaurant one evening, and an older gentleman (older than me) was sitting there alone eating. I saw his ball cap had on a Senior Chief (E-8), Retired Navy patch. He was sitting just sipping his coffee. I stopped by and said, "Good evening, Senior Chief. Thank you for your service to our country," and saluted him. His eyes got a bit misty and he stammered a quiet, "Thank you."
Take some time to thank a vet. That older fella down the street...was he a Korean War Vet? That retired nurse...was she in Viet Nam? We are losing our WW2 vets at over 1,000 a day now. That computer operator he keeps his hair short...a gulf war U.S. Marine vet? "Our" UPS driver is a 2 time combat vet from the gulf wars.
So many of our men and women have been wounded, maimed and killed fighting for the freedom of not only America but for many countries around the world. I lost twin uncles (one KIA the other MIA) fighting for the freedom of South Korea. My father lost an arm in France fighting for the freedom of all Europe.
If you can read, thank a teacher. If you can read English, thank a vet.
(USN, retired/in-country Viet Nam vet)

I used to feel like a simple "Thank You" was enough. Having been a civilian for 8 years now, I no longer think so. I think the best way to say thank you to the soldiers is to be heard. Make a statement, loud and clear, and get into newspapers, or on the news. I'm tired of the Media trashing the military, touting blatant lies and skewed figures, and refusing to show the real stories. The schools, hospitals, libraries, etc. that we've built in Iraq. The way the Iraqi people, as a whole, are incredibly thankful. Who gets the press? That horrible "church" that pickets the funerals of fallen soldiers. It's time that people start holding the media accountable, and start fighting back. I'm tired of having my stomach churned every time I turn on the TV.

You are so thoroughly welcome! It is people like you who motivated me through 17 years of service. You are the reason I was able to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom (phase 1) and feel good about what I was doing, despite having to be seperated for a year from my wife and children. Citizens such as yourself, are why people today are willing to put on a uniform, grab a weapon and put it on the line.

I am in the process of looking for work, and prior to reading this question, I was totally bummed out. Thank you for putting the smile back on my face, and reminded us that we are still appreciated. I served during peacetime almost 20 years ago--right after high school, learned lots about work, ethics, and people. There are great people in the world, and you are one of them!!!!

Have a great day, I know I will.

PS: Lets all remember to keep those in hostile areas in our prayers.

You're most welcome. It's nice to know there are still folks in this country who can put the political crap aside and realize that there are folks sacrificing themselves and their freedoms for the sake of people they don't know, even those who are ungrateful. People like you are the ones who make it worthwhile!
