Is there one for Law Enforcement and or Police?

I have a friend who's thinking about law enforcement as a career, can anyone give "real" information regarding how one would go about becoming a Police Officer. What are the pros and cons, the first steps, what to prepare for etc. everything he needs to do to go about becoming an officer. Looking for the real deal. Cheers

I think the commitment time for military is now 8 years that they can call you back.

My Police department has a hiring rule that if you leave the department in under 2 years, you have to pay the cost of Police Academy. It's a few thousand bucks nowadays. It's to keep you from going to another department where they will gladly hire you since you're already state certified and they wont have to cover the cost of your training.

Join the National Guard as an MP. Training isn't that long, and it's worth it, because it makes you a really good candidate for law enforcement. Then it's just a weekend a month and a week (I think) per year that you go train for the military, and I know that departments don't look down on you for needing that time to do that.

(I'm not sure exactly what you were asking. There's no real commitment for police like the military, it's just that you have to put in the effort to get through the academy and training period.)

First step would be to decide what kind of department you want (state or local) see what their requirements are via their website or speaking to a sergeant, then applying.

Pros: Honorable career with a chance to serve your community and country.

Cons: Can be stressful, odd and long hours, possible family problems if your family members aren't understanding about the fact that you have a job that can take time away from certain family activities and holidays.

Think about the economy now....Just stay in forever until you get old and THEY kick you out. You will be set for life. Retire at 40 in military or retire at 60 on civilian side

Theres not a commitment for police unless the department pays for your BLT classes if you have to take them or if you sign a contract with the organziation.
